🔧 Rear Window Regulator - Replacement
The rear power window regulator inside your RAV4's rear door controls the up-and-down movement of the glass. If the window is slow, crooked, noisy, or stuck, the regulator or its cable assembly is usually the problem and the inner door panel has to come off to replace it.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-3 hours per door
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Disconnect the 12V battery negative terminal before starting. The rear door has side-impact airbag wiring nearby.
- Wait at least 90 seconds after battery disconnect before unplugging any door connectors.
- Support the window glass before removing the regulator. If the glass drops, it can break.
- Use painter’s tape to hold the glass in the raised position.
- Do not turn the ignition on with door connectors unplugged.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Disconnect power
- Use a 10mm socket to disconnect the 12V battery negative terminal.
- Wait at least 90 seconds before touching any door wiring.
Step 2: Remove the rear door trim panel
- Use a trim panel removal tool to pry off the small cover behind the interior door handle.
- Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the screw hidden behind that cover.
- Use a flat plastic pry tool to pop up the switch panel or trim insert, then unplug the connector.
- Remove any remaining visible screws in the pull handle area using the Phillips screwdriver.
- Use the trim panel removal tool to release the door panel clips around the edges.
- Lift the panel straight up to unhook it from the window ledge.
Step 3: Remove the vapor barrier
- Use your hands and a flat plastic pry tool to peel back the vapor barrier carefully.
- Keep the adhesive clean so it can be reused.
- Peel slowly to avoid tearing.
Step 4: Secure the window glass
- Use painter’s tape to tape the glass to the door frame in the full-up position.
- If the glass is already down, carefully raise it by hand before taping it.
Step 5: Disconnect the regulator from the glass
- Use a 10mm socket to remove the bolts holding the glass to the regulator clamps through the access holes.
- Keep one hand on the glass while loosening the last fastener.
- Slide the glass fully up and tape it more securely if needed.
Step 6: Remove the old regulator
- Unplug the regulator motor connector.
- Use a 10mm socket to remove the regulator mounting bolts.
- Use a 12mm socket if your door uses larger mounting hardware in any position.
- Rotate and remove the regulator assembly through the largest service opening in the door.
- Work it out slowly to avoid bending the tracks.
Step 7: Install the new regulator
- Feed the new regulator into the door through the service opening.
- Start all mounting bolts by hand before tightening.
- Use a 10mm socket to snug the regulator bolts.
- Torque to 7.5 Nm (66 in-lbs) for small regulator bolts, unless your replacement unit specifies otherwise.
- Reconnect the motor connector.
Step 8: Reconnect the glass
- Lower the taped glass carefully into the regulator clamps.
- Use a 10mm socket to install the glass-to-regulator bolts.
- Torque to 8 Nm (71 in-lbs).
- Remove the painter’s tape only after the glass is secured.
Step 9: Test the window before reassembly
- Reconnect the 12V battery negative terminal with a 10mm socket.
- Turn the ignition on and run the window up and down several times.
- Check that the glass moves evenly and does not bind or tilt.
- If the auto-up feature is lost, hold the switch fully up for several seconds to relearn the stop position.
Step 10: Reinstall the door panel
- Reattach the vapor barrier and press the adhesive firmly into place.
- Reconnect all electrical connectors.
- Hang the door panel on the window ledge first, then press the clips into place.
- Reinstall all screws with the Phillips screwdriver.
- Snap the trim covers back into place with a flat plastic pry tool.
âś… After Repair
- Test the rear window from both the driver switch and the rear door switch, if equipped.
- Listen for rubbing, clicking, or uneven movement.
