🔧 Rear Window Regulator - Replacement

This repair covers replacing the rear door window regulator assembly on your Silverado. The regulator is the mechanism that raises and lowers the glass, and it often fails when the window moves slowly, binds, or drops into the door.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-2.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Disconnect the negative battery cable before removing the door panel. This prevents accidental airbag or window switch issues.
  • Rear doors contain side airbag wiring on some trims. Handle the door panel carefully and do not probe yellow connectors.
  • The window glass can drop suddenly when the regulator is removed. Support the glass with tape before unbolting anything.
  • Use eye protection. Broken clips and sharp door shell edges are common.

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and fully lower the affected rear window if it still moves.
  • Turn the ignition off and remove the key.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable and wait at least 2 minutes before starting.
  • Have tape ready to hold the glass once the regulator is loose.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the rear door trim panel

  • Use a 7mm socket to remove the screws in the armrest, handle area, and lower door panel.
  • Use a flat trim removal tool to pop the door panel clips loose from the door shell.
  • Lift the panel upward to release it from the window ledge.
  • Disconnect the window switch connector and any speaker connectors.

Step 2: Remove the moisture barrier

  • Use a flat trim removal tool to carefully peel back the vapor barrier.
  • Keep it clean so it can be reused.
  • Do not tear the barrier.

Step 3: Secure the glass

  • Move the window glass until the regulator bolts are visible through the access holes.
  • Use painter’s tape to hold the glass to the door frame from the outside.
  • Make sure the glass cannot slide down when the regulator is removed.

Step 4: Unbolt the glass from the regulator

  • Use a 10mm socket with a ratchet and extension to remove the glass-to-regulator bolts.
  • Support the glass while removing the last bolt.
  • Leave the glass taped in the upper position.

Step 5: Remove the old regulator

  • Use a 10mm socket to remove the regulator mounting bolts from the door shell.
  • Unplug the regulator motor connector.
  • Work the regulator assembly out through the large access opening in the door.
  • Rotate the assembly as needed.

Step 6: Install the new regulator

  • Feed the new regulator into the door and align it with the mounting holes.
  • Reconnect the motor connector.
  • Install the regulator bolts by hand first, then tighten with a 10mm socket.
  • Torque to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs).

Step 7: Reattach the glass

  • Lower the taped glass carefully onto the regulator clamps.
  • Use a 10mm socket to install and tighten the glass bolts.
  • Torque to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs).
  • Remove the painter’s tape only after the glass is secured.

Step 8: Test window operation before reassembly

  • Reconnect the battery temporarily.
  • Use the window switch to run the glass up and down several times.
  • Make sure it moves smoothly and sits evenly in the seal.
  • Disconnect the battery again before reassembling the door.

Step 9: Reinstall the door barrier and panel

  • Press the vapor barrier back into place with its adhesive or butyl tape.
  • Reconnect the switch and speaker connectors.
  • Hook the top of the panel on the window ledge, then press the clips in place.
  • Reinstall the screws with a 7mm socket.

âś… After Repair

  • Reconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Test the rear window several times from the switch and driver controls.
  • Check for air leaks, rattles, or binding at full up and full down positions.
  • If the auto-down function does not work, cycle the window fully down and fully up once more to relearn the stops.
