🔧 Focus - Rear Window Regulator Replacement
The rear window regulator is the cable-and-track mechanism inside the rear door that raises and lowers the glass. Replacement usually fixes a window that won’t move, moves crooked, or makes grinding/clicking noises.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-3.0 hours (per door)
Quick questions (so I match the parts exactly): Which rear door—left or right? Are you replacing the regulator only or the regulator + motor assembly?
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Support the glass at all times—if it drops, it can shatter or cut you.
- ⚠️ Keep fingers clear of the regulator arms/cables when powered.
- ⚠️ If you unplug the window motor, keep the key out of the ignition so no one hits the switch.
- ⚠️ Wear gloves—door shells have sharp edges.

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Rear window regulator - Qty: 1
- Rear window motor - Qty: 1 (only if not included with regulator)
- Door panel trim clip set - Qty: 1 (optional, replace any broken clips)
- Butyl seal strip - Qty: 1 (optional, if the vapor barrier adhesive won’t reseal)
📋 Before You Begin
- Park your Focus on level ground and open the rear door fully.
- Lower the rear window until you can access the glass-to-regulator clamps (if the window still moves).
- If the window is stuck up or down, you can still do the job—you’ll reposition the glass by hand once the panel is off.
- Trim tool = a plastic pry tool to avoid scratches.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the rear door trim panel
- Use a trim removal tool set (non-marring) to carefully pry up the window switch bezel and unplug the connector.
- Use a pick tool to pop off any small screw covers in the pull handle/armrest area.
- Remove the door panel screws using a 7mm socket and/or Phillips screwdriver (fasteners vary by panel location).
- Work around the outer edge: use the trim removal tool set (non-marring) to pop the push-clips free.
- Lift the panel straight up and off the window ledge, then disconnect any remaining connectors with needle-nose pliers as needed.
Step 2: Remove and preserve the vapor barrier
- Peel back the water shield (vapor barrier) slowly by hand.
- If the adhesive is stubborn, use a flat-blade screwdriver gently to help separate it without tearing.
- Stick it back out of the way so it stays clean for reinstallation.
Step 3: Secure the window glass
- Use painters tape (2") from the outside of the glass over the top of the door frame to hold the glass up.
- Add 2–3 long strips so the glass cannot slide down.
Step 4: Detach the glass from the regulator
- Locate the two glass clamp fasteners through the access holes in the door.
- Use an 8mm socket (common) to loosen the clamp bolts enough to release the glass.
- Once loose, lift the glass fully up by hand and re-tape it securely.
- Torque on reassembly: Torque to 8 Nm (71 in-lb)
Step 5: Unplug the window motor and remove the regulator assembly
- Unplug the motor connector by pressing the tab and pulling straight off (use a pick tool gently if the tab is stiff).
- Remove the regulator mounting bolts using a 10mm socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet and extension set (3" and 6").
- If your replacement is regulator only, remove the motor screws using a Torx T25 bit and transfer the motor to the new regulator.
- Snake the regulator out through the largest door opening (rotate it as needed).
- Torque on reassembly: Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lb) (regulator-to-door bolts)
Step 6: Install the new regulator (and motor if applicable)
- Feed the new regulator into the door cavity and align it to the mounting holes by hand.
- Start all bolts by hand first, then tighten using a 10mm socket.
- If transferring the motor, install it with a Torx T25 bit and snug evenly (do not overtighten).
- Plug the motor connector back in until it clicks.
- Torque: Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lb)
Step 7: Reattach the glass to the regulator
- Remove some tape so the glass can slide down in a controlled way.
- Lower the glass by hand into the regulator clamps and ensure it sits evenly left-to-right.
- Tighten the clamp bolts using an 8mm socket.
- Torque: Torque to 8 Nm (71 in-lb)
- Glass crooked now = scratches later.
Step 8: Function test before reassembling the door
- Temporarily plug the window switch back in.
- Turn the key to ON and run the window fully down and fully up.
- Listen for binding or clicking and watch that the glass stays straight in the run channels.
- Turn key OFF and unplug the switch again before reinstalling the panel.
Step 9: Reinstall the vapor barrier and door panel
- Press the vapor barrier back into the butyl adhesive by hand (add butyl seal strip if it won’t stick).
- Hang the door panel on the top lip first, then press the clips in around the perimeter with your hands.
- Reinstall screws using a 7mm socket and/or Phillips screwdriver.
- Snap trim covers back on using the trim removal tool set (non-marring).
✅ After Repair
- Cycle the rear window 5–10 times to confirm smooth movement and no popping noises.
- Verify the door opens/closes normally and the panel is fully seated (no rattles).
- If the auto-up/one-touch acts odd (if equipped), hold the switch UP for 2 seconds after fully closed, then DOWN for 2 seconds after fully open.
