🔧 CR-V - Rear Window Regulator Replacement

The rear window regulator is the mechanism that raises and lowers the window glass. If the window is slow, crooked, stuck, or you hear grinding inside the door, the regulator is usually the failed part. This job means removing the rear door trim panel, unbolting the glass, and swapping the regulator assembly.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-3 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Disconnect the negative battery cable before starting. This helps prevent accidental window movement.
  • The door glass is heavy and can drop suddenly. Support it with tape before loosening anything.
  • Wear safety glasses and gloves. Door trim clips and metal edges can be sharp.
  • Do not force the glass if it is jammed. Breaking the window will turn a simple repair into a major one.
  • Keep fingers away from the regulator tracks.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Trim panel removal tool
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Flat-blade screwdriver
  • 10mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Extension bar
  • Torque wrench
  • Painter's tape
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Safety glasses
  • Work gloves
  • Door clip tool (specialty)

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Window regulator mounting hardware - Qty: 1 set

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Lower the rear window as far as it will go if the motor still works. If it is stuck, continue with the panel removal.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable and wait at least 3 minutes before working in the door.
  • Use painter's tape to hold the glass in place before removing the regulator.
  • Work one rear door at a time.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the rear door trim panel

  • Use a trim panel removal tool to pop off the switch panel and any trim covers on the rear door.
  • Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the visible screws in the armrest and handle area.
  • Use a trim panel removal tool or door clip tool (specialty) to release the panel clips around the edge of the door.
  • Lift the panel upward to unhook it from the top window ledge.
  • Disconnect any electrical connectors for the window switch or speaker.

Step 2: Remove the water shield

  • Peel back the plastic moisture barrier carefully. Use a flat-blade screwdriver only if needed.
  • Do not tear the barrier. You will need it during reassembly.
  • Keep the adhesive clean for reuse.

Step 3: Secure the window glass

  • Use painter's tape to hold the glass fully up against the door frame.
  • If the glass is already down, move it by hand only if it can be lifted safely.
  • If needed, remove the small access cover in the inner door skin to reach the glass clamps.

Step 4: Unbolt the glass from the regulator

  • Use a 10mm socket, ratchet, and extension bar to loosen the glass clamp bolts through the access openings.
  • Support the glass while removing the last fastener.
  • Slide the glass upward slightly and tape it securely to the door frame.
  • Torque to factory specification during reassembly.

Step 5: Remove the regulator assembly

  • Use a 10mm socket to remove the regulator mounting bolts from the door.
  • Disconnect the regulator motor electrical connector.
  • Rotate and guide the regulator out through the largest access opening in the door shell.
  • Take note of how it fits before removing it.

Step 6: Install the new regulator

  • Feed the new regulator assembly into the door opening in the same orientation as the old one.
  • Reconnect the motor connector.
  • Start all mounting bolts by hand using a 10mm socket, then tighten them evenly.
  • Torque to factory specification during reassembly.

Step 7: Reattach the glass

  • Lower the taped glass carefully until the mounting points line up with the regulator clamps.
  • Use a 10mm socket to reinstall the glass clamp bolts.
  • Remove the tape only after the glass is fully secured.
  • Torque to factory specification during reassembly.

Step 8: Test the window movement

  • Reconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Use the window switch to run the glass up and down several times.
  • Check for smooth movement, straight travel, and proper sealing at the top.
  • If the glass binds, stop and recheck alignment before reinstalling the door panel.

Step 9: Reinstall the door panel

  • Reconnect all electrical connectors.
  • Set the moisture barrier back in place.
  • Hang the door panel on the top ledge, then press the clips into the door.
  • Reinstall all screws with a Phillips screwdriver.
  • Snap the trim covers back into place.

✅ After Repair

  • Test the rear window again from both the door switch and the driver's master switch.
  • Listen for grinding, clicking, or uneven motion.
  • Make sure the door panel sits flush and no clips are loose.
  • Confirm the glass seals fully at the top with no air gap.
