🔧 Rear Window Regulator - Replacement

This repair replaces the power window regulator inside the rear door. The door panel comes off first, then the glass is secured, and the regulator/motor assembly is removed through the access opening.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-3 hours per side

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Disconnect the negative battery cable before starting. This reduces the chance of accidental window or door module activation.
  • Support the glass before removing the regulator. If the glass drops, it can break.
  • Keep fingers away from the regulator tracks and cable drum.
  • Do not force plastic clips or the vapor barrier.
  • Have tape ready before opening the door.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and open the rear door you are repairing.
  • Lower the window if it still moves. If not, be ready to secure the glass by hand.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Use painter's tape to hold the glass in the up position once you access it.
  • Keep all screws grouped by step.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the rear door trim panel

  • Use a 7mm socket and Phillips screwdriver to remove the visible panel screws.
  • Use a trim clip tool to release the panel clips around the edge.
  • Lift the panel upward to unhook it from the window ledge.
  • Disconnect the electrical connector for the window switch.

Step 2: Remove the vapor barrier

  • Peel back the vapor barrier carefully.
  • Use a panel removal tool to separate the adhesive without tearing the barrier.
  • Set it aside clean so it can be reused.

Step 3: Secure the glass

  • Use painter's tape to hold the window glass fully up against the door frame.
  • If the glass is already down, raise it by hand before disconnecting the regulator.
  • Do not skip this step.

Step 4: Disconnect the glass from the regulator

  • Remove the access cover or inner fasteners as needed with a Torx T20 screwdriver or Torx T25 screwdriver.
  • Use a 10mm socket to loosen the glass-to-regulator clamp bolts, if equipped.
  • Slide the glass fully up and tape it securely to the door frame.

Step 5: Remove the regulator assembly

  • Unplug the window motor electrical connector.
  • Use a 10mm socket and ratchet with extension bar to remove the regulator mounting bolts.
  • Carefully guide the regulator out through the door access opening.
  • Torque on reassembly: Tighten regulator mounting bolts to 8-10 Nm (71-89 in-lbs).

Step 6: Install the new regulator

  • Feed the new regulator assembly into the door opening.
  • Align the mounting holes and start all bolts by hand.
  • Reconnect the electrical connector to the motor.
  • Use a 10mm socket to tighten the mounting bolts.
  • Torque regulator mounting bolts to 8-10 Nm (71-89 in-lbs).

Step 7: Reconnect the glass

  • Lower the tape-supported glass carefully onto the regulator clamps.
  • Install the glass clamp fasteners using a 10mm socket.
  • Make sure the glass sits straight in the track before final tightening.
  • Torque glass clamp bolts to 6-8 Nm (53-71 in-lbs).

Step 8: Test the window before reassembly

  • Reconnect the battery negative cable using a 10mm socket.
  • Cycle the window up and down with the switch.
  • Check for smooth movement, noise, and correct alignment.
  • If the glass binds, loosen the clamps and realign the glass.

Step 9: Reassemble the door

  • Reinstall the vapor barrier with the original adhesive or new vapor barrier adhesive tape.
  • Reconnect the door panel electrical connector.
  • Hang the panel on the upper ledge and press the clips into place.
  • Reinstall the screws with a 7mm socket and Phillips screwdriver.
  • Torque panel screws snugly only; do not overtighten.

✅ After Repair

  • Run the rear window through several full cycles.
  • Check that the glass seals evenly at the top.
  • Listen for scraping or clicking sounds.
  • If the window stops short, perform the one-touch initialization by holding the switch fully up and fully down for a few seconds at each end.
