🔧 Rear Window Regulator - Replacement

The rear window regulator moves the glass up and down inside the rear door. On your Silverado, the door panel must come off, the glass must be supported, and the regulator/motor assembly is removed from inside the door. If the window is slow, crooked, or stuck, replacing the regulator usually fixes it.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-3 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Keep hands clear of the regulator tracks; they can pinch hard.
  • Support the glass before loosening the regulator.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable if you will unplug the window switch or door wiring.
  • Use tape to hold the glass in place while the regulator is out.
  • Be careful with the moisture barrier so it can be reused.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 7mm socket
  • 10mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Short extension
  • Trim panel removal tool
  • Flat-blade trim tool
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Tape measure
  • Painter’s tape
  • Torque wrench
  • Safety glasses
  • Gloves

  • Door panel clips - Qty: 1 set
  • Moisture barrier adhesive - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Fully lower the affected rear window if it still moves.
  • If the window is stuck, tape the glass in the fully up position before starting.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable if you will unplug the power window switch or door harness.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the rear door trim panel

  • Use a trim panel removal tool to pop off the rear door panel clips.
  • Use a 7mm socket to remove the visible door panel screws.
  • Use a Phillips screwdriver if any screw covers or handle screws are present.
  • Lift the panel upward to unhook it from the window ledge.
  • Disconnect the switch connector if equipped.

Step 2: Remove the moisture barrier

  • Use a flat-blade trim tool to carefully peel back the moisture barrier.
  • Keep the barrier clean so it can be reused.
  • Do not tear the seal if you can avoid it.

Step 3: Support the glass

  • If the glass is not already taped up, raise it by hand if possible.
  • Use painter’s tape across the door frame and glass to hold it in place.
  • If the glass is stuck down, have an assistant hold it while you work.

Step 4: Remove the regulator fasteners

  • Use a 10mm socket with a ratchet and short extension to remove the regulator mounting bolts.
  • Locate the glass-to-regulator fasteners through the access openings in the door.
  • Use the 10mm socket to remove the glass clamp bolts.

Step 5: Disconnect and remove the old regulator

  • Unplug the window motor connector if the motor is attached to the regulator.
  • Carefully tilt and snake the regulator assembly out through the door opening.
  • If needed, turn the regulator by hand to create clearance.

Step 6: Install the new regulator

  • Position the new regulator assembly inside the door.
  • Hand-start all mounting bolts before tightening.
  • Reconnect the motor connector if equipped.
  • Use a 10mm socket to tighten the regulator bolts evenly.
  • Torque to 8 Nm (71 in-lbs).

Step 7: Reattach the glass to the regulator

  • Align the glass with the regulator clamps.
  • Install the glass clamp bolts by hand first.
  • Use a 10mm socket to tighten the clamp bolts.
  • Torque to 8 Nm (71 in-lbs).

Step 8: Test the window before reassembly

  • Reconnect the battery if it was disconnected.
  • Use the window switch to move the glass up and down.
  • Watch for smooth movement and proper alignment in the tracks.
  • If the glass binds, stop and realign it before continuing.

Step 9: Reinstall the moisture barrier and door panel

  • Press the moisture barrier back into place with adhesive as needed.
  • Reconnect the window switch connector.
  • Hang the door panel on the upper window ledge first.
  • Press all clips into place using firm hand pressure.
  • Reinstall the 7mm screws and any handle screws.

âś… After Repair

  • Cycle the rear window several times to confirm smooth operation.
  • Check that the glass sits level in the door frame.
  • Listen for clicking or grinding, which can mean misalignment.
  • Make sure the door panel is fully seated and all switches work.
