🔧 Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

The rear turn signal bulbs sit inside the tail lamp housings. You’ll remove the lamp assembly, swap the bulb, and reinstall everything carefully so the seals stay tight.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the lights off before starting.
  • Let the bulbs cool down before touching them; hot bulbs can burn you.
  • Handle new bulbs with clean gloves or a clean cloth. Oil from your fingers can shorten bulb life.
  • Make sure the tail lamp gasket stays seated so water does not get inside.
  • No battery disconnect is required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 8mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Trim panel tool
  • Small flat-blade screwdriver
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear turn signal bulb - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on a level surface and shift to Park.
  • Set the parking brake.
  • Turn the light switch off.
  • If one bulb failed, it is smart to replace both rear turn signal bulbs at the same time.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the tailgate

  • Lower the tailgate fully so you can reach the rear lamp fasteners.

Step 2: Remove the tail lamp bolts

  • Use an 8mm socket and ratchet to remove the tail lamp screws on the side with the failed bulb.
  • Keep the screws in a safe place.

Step 3: Pull the tail lamp straight out

  • Use both hands and pull the lamp housing straight rearward.
  • If it sticks, use a trim panel tool to gently help release it.
  • Do not pry hard on the painted panel.

Step 4: Disconnect the bulb carrier

  • Twist the bulb socket counterclockwise and pull it out of the lamp housing.
  • If needed, use a small flat-blade screwdriver very gently on the release tab.

Step 5: Replace the bulb

  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
  • Push the new rear turn signal bulb in fully.
  • Do not touch the glass.

Step 6: Reinstall the socket

  • Insert the socket back into the lamp housing.
  • Twist it clockwise until it locks.

Step 7: Reinstall the tail lamp

  • Align the lamp with the body openings.
  • Push it straight in until it seats fully.
  • Reinstall the screws with the 8mm socket.
  • Torque to 3.5 Nm (31 in-lbs).

Step 8: Test the new bulb

  • Turn on the left and right turn signals.
  • Verify the new bulb flashes normally.
  • Check the brake light and running light while you are there.

✅ After Repair

  • Make sure the lamp sits flush with the body.
  • Check for any water leaks after the next rain or wash.
  • If the bulb still does not work, check the socket for corrosion or damage.
