🔧 Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

On your Corolla, the rear turn signal bulb is accessed from inside the trunk by removing the rear combination lamp access cover and unplugging the bulb socket. This is a simple repair, and replacing both sides at the same time is a smart idea so the light color and brightness stay matched.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the headlights and ignition off before starting.
  • Let the bulbs cool before touching them; hot bulbs can burn your fingers.
  • Use a clean glove or paper towel when handling the new bulb; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
  • No battery disconnect is required for this repair.
  • Work carefully around the rear lamp housing so you do not crack the lens or snap the trim clips.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4-inch ratchet
  • Short extension
  • Trim panel tool
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear turn signal bulb - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the trunk and clear out the cargo area so you can reach the rear lamp access panels easily.
  • Have the new bulb ready before removing the old one.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the trunk and locate the access area

  • Open the trunk and look at the inside trim behind the rear lamp on the side you are replacing.
  • Use a flashlight to find the small access cover or trunk side trim opening.
  • Move gently to avoid broken clips.

Step 2: Remove the access cover and trim fasteners

  • Use the trim panel tool to carefully pop off the access cover or trim piece.
  • If your trim panel blocks access, use the 10mm socket, 1/4-inch ratchet, and short extension to remove the retaining nuts or fasteners holding the lamp area trim.
  • Set the fasteners aside in a safe place.

Step 3: Remove the bulb socket

  • Reach behind the lamp and twist the turn signal bulb socket counterclockwise to unlock it.
  • Pull the socket straight out of the lamp housing.
  • Do not yank on the wires.

Step 4: Replace the bulb

  • Press the bulb in slightly and turn it counterclockwise if it is a twist-lock style, or pull it straight out if it is a push-in style.
  • Install the new bulb by aligning it correctly and pushing or twisting it into place.
  • Make sure the bulb is fully seated.

Step 5: Reinstall the socket

  • Insert the socket back into the lamp housing.
  • Turn it clockwise until it locks.
  • If you removed any retaining nuts, reinstall them with the 10mm socket and tighten to Torque to 5.4 Nm (48 in-lbs).

Step 6: Test the new bulb

  • Turn the ignition on and activate the turn signal for that side.
  • Check that the rear bulb flashes normally and matches the other side.
  • If it does not light, remove the socket and check bulb seating again.

✅ After Repair

  • Check both rear turn signals, the brake lights, and the tail lights before closing the trunk.
  • Make sure the trunk trim is fully snapped back into place.
  • If one bulb failed early, replacing both sides now helps avoid a repeat repair soon.
