🔧 Rear Turn Signal Bulbs - Bulb Replacement

Replacing the rear turn signal bulbs means removing the tail lamp assemblies, swapping the bulbs, and reinstalling everything with care. On your F-150, this is a straightforward job that does not require a scan tool, but you should handle the bulbs gently so you do not damage the sockets or lens.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the lighting switch off before starting.
  • Let the bulbs cool before touching the housing.
  • Do not touch the glass on a new bulb with bare fingers; oil can shorten bulb life.
  • If a bulb is stuck, do not force it. Twist and pull gently.
  • Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 8mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Short extension
  • Trim panel tool
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear turn signal bulb - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Put the transmission in Park.
  • Open the tailgate for easier access to the tail lamp fasteners.
  • Keep the new bulbs in their packaging until you are ready to install them.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the tailgate

  • Lower the tailgate fully to reach the rear lamp mounting screws.
  • Keep the tailgate supported.

Step 2: Remove the tail lamp screws

  • Use an 8mm socket, ratchet, and short extension to remove the tail lamp fasteners.
  • Set the screws aside where they will not roll away.

Step 3: Pull the tail lamp assembly outward

  • Grip the tail lamp housing and pull it straight rearward to release the locating pins.
  • If it sticks, use a trim panel tool gently at the edge to help it start moving.

Step 4: Disconnect the bulb socket

  • Twist the rear turn signal bulb socket counterclockwise and remove it from the lamp housing.
  • Do not pull on the wiring.

Step 5: Replace the bulb

  • Remove the old bulb from the socket by pulling it straight out.
  • Install the new bulb by pushing it in firmly.
  • Make sure the bulb seats fully.

Step 6: Reinstall the socket and lamp

  • Insert the socket back into the housing and twist it clockwise to lock it.
  • Align the tail lamp locating pins with the body and press the lamp into place.
  • Reinstall the fasteners with the 8mm socket and ratchet.
  • Torque to snug only; do not overtighten the plastic lamp screws.

Step 7: Test the new bulb

  • Turn on the left and right turn signals one at a time.
  • Check that both rear signals flash normally.
  • Verify the brake light and tail light still work on that side.

✅ After Repair

  • Walk around the truck and confirm both rear signals flash at the correct rate.
  • Check that the tail lamp is fully seated and flush with the body.
  • If the turn signal flashes rapidly, recheck the bulb installation.
