🔧 Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

Replace the rear turn signal bulbs in both tail lamps if one is out, or replace both together to keep the light output matched. On your Equinox, the rear turn signal bulb is serviced from inside the rear lamp assembly, so you’ll access it from the cargo area.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the ignition off and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
  • Let the tail lamp cool before touching it.
  • Do not touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
  • If equipped with LED rear lamps on a specific build, the bulb may not be serviceable; this procedure applies to bulb-type rear turn signals.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Trim panel removal tool
  • 7mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Extension bar
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear turn signal bulb - Qty: 2

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the liftgate for better access to the rear lamp fasteners.
  • Turn the lights off and make sure the turn signal switch is not active.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the cargo area and access the rear lamp area

  • Open the liftgate.
  • Move any cargo away from the side you’re working on.
  • If needed, use the trim panel removal tool to carefully pop loose the side trim access panel near the tail lamp.

Step 2: Remove the rear lamp fasteners

  • Use a 7mm socket, ratchet, and extension bar to remove the rear lamp retaining fasteners.
  • Keep the fasteners in a safe place so they do not get lost.

Step 3: Remove the tail lamp assembly

  • Pull the tail lamp straight rearward to release the locating pins.
  • Do not twist the lamp hard. Gentle pressure prevents broken clips.

Step 4: Remove the bulb socket

  • Turn the rear turn signal bulb socket counterclockwise to unlock it.
  • Pull the socket out of the lamp housing.

Step 5: Replace the bulb

  • Remove the old bulb from the socket.
  • Install the new rear turn signal bulb into the socket.
  • Make sure the bulb is fully seated and straight.

Step 6: Reinstall the socket and lamp

  • Insert the socket back into the lamp housing and turn it clockwise to lock it.
  • Align the lamp pins with the body openings and push the lamp into place.
  • Reinstall the retaining fasteners with the 7mm socket, ratchet, and extension bar.
  • Torque to snug only; do not overtighten the small lamp fasteners.

Step 7: Refit the trim panel

  • Snap the side access panel back into place.
  • Make sure the trim sits flush.

âś… After Repair

  • Turn on the parking lights and test the rear turn signal on the repaired side.
  • Check the opposite side too if you replaced both bulbs.
  • Verify the lamp flashes at a normal rate and the bulb warning message is gone, if one was present.
