- Park on level ground and open the trunk.
- Turn the headlight switch off.
- If the bulb failed on one side, it is smart to replace the other side too.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the trunk and clear access
- Open the trunk and move any cargo away from the side you are working on.
- Pull back the trunk side trim panel near the tail lamp. Use a plastic trim tool to gently release any push clips.
Step 2: Remove the tail lamp fasteners
- Use a 10mm socket, 1/4-inch drive ratchet, and extension to remove the tail lamp nuts.
- Keep the nuts in a safe place.
- Torque on reinstall: 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
Step 3: Remove the tail lamp assembly
- Pull the tail lamp straight rearward to release the alignment pins.
- Pull evenly; do not twist.
- If it sticks, wiggle it gently while pulling back.
Step 4: Replace the turn signal bulb
- Find the turn signal bulb socket on the back of the lamp housing.
- Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand to remove it.
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
- Install the new bulb by pressing it straight in.
- Reinstall the socket into the lamp housing and twist clockwise until locked.
- Do not touch the glass.
Step 5: Reinstall the tail lamp
- Align the lamp pins with the body openings.
- Press the lamp straight into place.
- Install the 10mm nuts and tighten them evenly with the 10mm socket.
- Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
Step 6: Test the repair
- Turn on the ignition.
- Activate the rear turn signal and verify normal flashing on the repaired side.
- Check that the tail light lens sits flush with the body.
✅ After Repair
- Confirm both rear turn signals flash at normal speed.
- Check brake light and tail light operation on that side.
- If the bulb flashes fast, recheck the bulb type and socket seating.
