🔧 Camry - Rear Taillight Bulb Replacement

Your Camry’s rear combination lamps are LED-equipped on this model, so there are no standard replaceable taillight bulbs inside the outer lamp assemblies. If one side is out, the usual fix is replacing the complete rear lamp assembly, not just a bulb.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1-2 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Disconnect the 12V battery before unplugging rear lamp connectors.
  • Do not touch yellow airbag connectors near the trunk-side trim if equipped.
  • Handle the lamp lens carefully to avoid cracking the housing tabs.
  • If the lamp has moisture or burned LED sections, replace the full assembly.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Short extension
  • Trim panel removal tool
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and open the trunk.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm socket.
  • Keep the trunk trim screws organized.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the rear lamp fasteners

  • Open the trunk and locate the rear lamp access area behind the side trim.
  • Use a trim panel removal tool to carefully pull back the trunk side liner as needed.

Step 2: Remove the rear lamp retaining nuts

  • Use a 10mm socket, ratchet, and short extension to remove the rear lamp nuts.
  • Support the lamp from the outside as you remove the last fastener so it does not drop.
  • Torque for installation: 5.5 N·m (49 in-lb).

Step 3: Remove the lamp assembly

  • Gently pull the lamp straight rearward to release the alignment pins.
  • Do not twist the lens or force the housing.
  • Disconnect the electrical connector.

Step 4: Install the new lamp assembly

  • Reconnect the electrical connector to the new assembly.
  • Align the pins with the body openings and press the lamp into place.
  • Install the retaining nuts with a 10mm socket.
  • Torque to 5.5 N·m (49 in-lb).

Step 5: Reassemble and test

  • Reinstall the trunk trim liner with your hands.
  • Reconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm socket.
  • Test tail, brake, turn, and reverse lighting before closing the trunk.

✅ After Repair

  • Check both rear lamps for even brightness and proper sealing.
  • Confirm there is no gap between the lamp and the quarter panel.
  • Look for moisture after the next rain or car wash.
