🔧 Tahoe - Rear Door Window Regulator Replacement
Replacing the rear door window regulator on your Tahoe involves removing the rear door trim panel, disconnecting the window motor wiring, unbolting the regulator, and transferring the window glass to the new regulator. I need two quick details so I can give the exact bolt locations, connector handling, and correct torque specs.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-3.0 hours (one door)
Please answer: (1) Left rear or right rear door? (2) Are you replacing regulator only or regulator + motor assembly?
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery cable before working in the door (side-impact airbag wiring may be present).
- ⚠️ Support the window glass with tape before unbolting it so it doesn’t drop.
- ⚠️ Keep fingers clear of the scissor/cable mechanism; it can pinch hard.
🔧 Required Tools

- Painters tape (1.5")
- Work gloves
- Safety glasses
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Rear door window regulator - Qty: 1
- Rear door window motor - Qty: 1 (only if not included)
- Door panel retainer clips - Qty: 6-12 (as needed)
- Butyl tape (water shield adhesive) - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and open the rear door you’re working on.
- Use the window switch to move the glass to about halfway down (this lines up the glass clamps/bolts for access).
- Disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket, then wait 2 minutes before unplugging anything in the door.
- Tip: Put screws in labeled cups.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the rear door trim panel
- Use a small flathead screwdriver to gently pop off the trim caps hiding screws (typically near the pull handle and/or door latch bezel area).
- Remove the exposed screws with a 7mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet.
- Use a trim clip removal tool to pop the panel retainers free around the perimeter.
- Lift the door panel straight upward to unhook it from the window ledge.
- Unplug the window switch connector(s) by releasing the lock tab with a small flathead screwdriver.
Step 2: Remove the water shield (vapor barrier)
- Carefully peel the plastic water shield back by hand.
- If the adhesive is stubborn, use a small flathead screwdriver to help separate it without tearing.
- Plan to reseal it later with butyl tape so water stays out of the cabin.
Step 3: Secure the window glass
- Use painters tape (1.5") to tape the glass to the door frame (run several strips from outside over the top into the inside).
- This keeps the glass from falling when you disconnect it from the regulator.
Step 4: Disconnect the glass from the regulator
- Locate the regulator-to-glass attachment points through the access holes.
- Use a 10mm socket and ratchet + extension to loosen/remove the glass-to-regulator fasteners.
- Once free, push the glass fully up by hand and add more painters tape (1.5") to hold it.
Step 5: Unplug and remove the regulator (and motor if included)
- Unplug the window motor connector by releasing the lock tab with a small flathead screwdriver.
- Remove the regulator mounting bolts with a 10mm socket.
- Maneuver the regulator out through the large door opening.
Step 6: Install the new regulator
- Feed the new regulator into the door and start all mounting bolts by hand.
- Tighten the mounting bolts with a 10mm socket.
- Torque specs depend on left vs right door and regulator type. Reply to the two questions at the top and I’ll give you the exact Torque to XX Nm (YY ft-lbs) values for all fasteners on your Tahoe.
Step 7: Reattach the glass and test
- Lower the glass carefully into the regulator channel/clamps.
- Install the glass fasteners using a 10mm socket.
- Reconnect the motor connector.
- Reconnect the battery negative cable using a 10mm socket.
- Test the window operation before reinstalling the water shield and door panel.
Step 8: Reinstall the water shield and door panel
- Reseal the water shield using butyl tape, pressing it firmly all the way around.
- Reconnect the switch connector(s).
- Hang the panel on the top lip first, then press in all trim clips.
- Reinstall the screws using a 7mm socket.
✅ After Repair
- Run the window fully down and fully up 3–5 times to confirm smooth travel and no clicking/grinding.
- Check the door for water shield gaps (this prevents wet carpet).
- If the window tilts or binds, loosen the regulator bolts slightly, align, then retighten to the correct torque (I’ll provide once you answer the two questions).
