š§ Sierra 1500 - Rear Door Lock Actuator Replacement
On your Sierra 1500, the rear ādoor lock actuatorā is built into the rear door latch assembly. Replacing it means removing the inner door panel, peeling back the water shield, then swapping the latch/actuator unit on the door edge.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-3.0 hours (first-time DIY)
Quick question: Are we replacing the left-rear or right-rear actuator? (Steps are the same; the part is different.)
ā ļø Safety & Precautions
- ā ļø Disconnect the negative battery cable before unplugging door wiring to prevent shorts.
- ā ļø Keep the window fully up while working to avoid glass damage.
- ā ļø Support the door panel so it doesnāt hang by the wiring.
- ā ļø Donāt tear the water shield; it prevents leaks and wind noise.

š© Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Rear door latch/lock actuator assembly - Qty: 1
- Door trim panel clips - Qty: 6-12 (handy to have spares)
- Water shield butyl tape - Qty: 1
š Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to P, and set the parking brake.
- Lower the rear window slightly, then raise it fully (so you know itās seated).
- Use a 10mm socket to disconnect the negative battery cable and isolate it so it canāt spring back.
- Trim clip removal tool = a forked plastic/metal tool that pops panel clips without breaking them.
šØ Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Protect the door and set up
- Apply painterās tape along the painted door edge and around the handle area to prevent scratches.
- Position a work light so you can see inside the door.
Step 2: Remove the rear door switch/trim pieces
- Use a trim clip removal tool to carefully pry up the window switch bezel/armrest trim (start at the rear edge).
- Unplug the electrical connector(s) using a pick tool to release the lock tab (donāt pull on wires).
Step 3: Remove the rear door panel (trim panel)
- Remove the screw(s) behind the inside door handle using a 7mm socket (some panels use a small cover you pry off first with a small flat screwdriver).
- Remove the screw(s) at the bottom/edge of the panel using a 7mm socket.
- Pop the panel clips free: use a trim clip removal tool around the perimeter until the panel is loose.
- Lift the panel straight up to unhook it from the window ledge, then support it.
- Disconnect any remaining connectors (courtesy light, etc.) using a pick tool.
Step 4: Remove the water shield (vapor barrier)
- Carefully peel the water shield back using your hands and a small flat screwdriver where needed.
- If the butyl (sticky sealant) wonāt re-stick later, plan to use water shield butyl tape during reassembly.
Step 5: Disconnect the latch/actuator wiring and linkages
- Locate the latch/actuator electrical connector near the latch area and unplug it using a pick tool.
- Disconnect the inside handle cable/rod from the latch:
- Use a pick tool to flip the plastic retaining clip open, then lift the cable/rod end out.
- Disconnect the lock rod (if equipped) the same way using a pick tool.
- Take a quick photo before unhooking rods.
Step 6: Remove the rear door latch/actuator assembly
- On the door edge, remove the three latch screws using a Torx T30 bit with a 1/4" drive ratchet and 3" extension.
- Support the latch with one hand, then work it out through the access opening.
Step 7: Install the new latch/actuator assembly
- Place the new latch/actuator into position inside the door.
- Start all three latch screws by hand, then tighten using a Torx T30 bit.
- Torque to 9 Nm (80 in-lb) using a torque wrench.
Step 8: Reconnect rods/cables and electrical connector
- Reconnect the inside handle cable/rod to the latch by hand, then lock the retaining clip using a pick tool if needed.
- Reconnect the lock rod (if present) the same way.
- Plug in the latch/actuator connector until it clicks (press firmly by hand).
Step 9: Function test before reassembly
- Reconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
- With the door open, test:
- Power lock/unlock using the switch.
- Inside handle opens the latch.
- Outside handle opens the latch.
- If anything binds, disconnect the battery again using a 10mm socket and re-check rod routing/clip seating.
Step 10: Reinstall the water shield and door panel
- Re-stick the water shield. If it wonāt seal, apply water shield butyl tape by hand along the perimeter.
- Reconnect all door panel connectors by hand until they click.
- Hang the panel on the top lip first, then press the clips in around the perimeter with your palm.
- Reinstall panel screws using a 7mm socket.
- Reinstall the switch bezel and press it in place by hand.
ā After Repair
- Verify the rear door locks/unlocks from the key fob and from the driver switch.
- Open/close the rear door 5-10 times to confirm smooth handle feel and full latching.
- Check for wind noise or water leaks after the next wash/rain (water shield seal).
