🔧 Rear Door Lock Actuator - Replacement

Replacing the rear door lock actuator restores normal locking and unlocking if the door clicks, sticks, or only works intermittently. On your Ram, the actuator is built into the latch assembly, so the job involves removing the rear door trim panel, disconnecting the latch, and installing the new unit.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-2.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Disconnect the negative battery cable before starting to avoid accidental power lock operation.
  • Use caution around the door side-impact airbag area inside the door.
  • Support the door trim panel so it does not hang by the wiring.
  • Keep the window fully up before removing the panel.
  • Work slowly around brittle plastic clips.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 7mm socket
  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4-inch ratchet
  • 1/4-inch extension
  • Trim panel removal tool
  • Flat-blade trim tool
  • Torx T20 screwdriver
  • Torx T30 screwdriver
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Pick tool
  • Torque wrench
  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear door lock actuator/latch assembly - Qty: 1
  • Door trim panel clips - Qty: 1 set
  • Butyl seal or vapor barrier adhesive - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Lower the rear window slightly if needed, then raise it fully before starting.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable and wait 2 minutes.
  • Have a small container ready for screws and clips.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the door trim screws

  • Use the 7mm socket and Torx T20 screwdriver to remove the visible screws around the rear door panel.
  • Check the pull handle, armrest, and lower edge for hidden fasteners.
  • Keep the screws in order so they go back in the same spots.

Step 2: Pry off the door panel

  • Use the trim panel removal tool to pop the door panel clips loose around the perimeter.
  • Lift the panel upward to release it from the window ledge.
  • Disconnect any electrical connectors for the window switch or speaker.
  • Do not pull hard on one corner.

Step 3: Remove the vapor barrier

  • Use the flat-blade trim tool to carefully peel back the vapor barrier.
  • Keep the adhesive clean so it can seal again later.
  • If the adhesive is damaged, replace it with new butyl seal.

Step 4: Disconnect the latch linkage and electrical connector

  • Use your hands and needle-nose pliers if needed to unclip the lock rods and cable from the latch.
  • Press the locking tab and unplug the actuator connector.
  • Take a photo before removal if the linkage layout is unclear.

Step 5: Remove the latch/actuator assembly

  • Use the 10mm socket, 1/4-inch ratchet, and extension to remove the latch mounting bolts from the door edge.
  • Slide the latch assembly out through the service opening in the door.
  • If it sticks, use the pick tool to guide the rods clear.
  • Torque on reassembly: 9 Nm (80 in-lbs).

Step 6: Install the new actuator/latch

  • Insert the new rear door lock actuator/latch assembly into the door.
  • Reconnect the lock rods, cable, and electrical connector.
  • Make sure every clip snaps fully into place.
  • Install the mounting bolts and tighten with the 10mm socket.
  • Torque to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs).

Step 7: Test the mechanism before reassembly

  • Reconnect the negative battery cable temporarily.
  • Use the power lock switch to check lock and unlock operation.
  • Open and close the rear door several times to confirm smooth latch action.
  • If it binds, stop and recheck the rod connections.

Step 8: Reinstall the vapor barrier and door panel

  • Press the vapor barrier back into place using the original adhesive or new butyl seal.
  • Reconnect all electrical connectors on the door panel.
  • Align the panel with the window ledge, then press the clips in with your hands.
  • Reinstall the screws using the 7mm socket and Torx T20 screwdriver.
  • Torque to 2.5 Nm (22 in-lbs) for trim screws if applicable.

✅ After Repair

  • Cycle the power locks several times from the key fob and inside switch.
  • Check that the rear door opens from inside and outside normally.
  • Listen for any clicking or binding from the latch area.
  • Verify the door panel sits flush and all clips are fully seated.
