🔧 Rear Door Lock Actuator - Replacement

The rear door lock actuator is the electric motor inside the door latch assembly that locks and unlocks the door. On your Sierra, the actuator is serviced as part of the rear door latch assembly, so the door panel and latch assembly must be removed to replace it.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-2.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Disconnect the negative battery cable before removing the door trim panel. This helps prevent accidental power window or lock operation.
  • Use care around sharp metal edges inside the door shell.
  • Support the door panel while disconnecting electrical connectors so it does not hang by the wiring.
  • Keep water barrier plastic intact if possible. If it tears, reseal it before reassembly.
  • Handle clips gently to avoid breakage.

  • Turn the ignition off and remove the key.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm socket.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the door trim panel

  • Use a 7mm socket to remove the screws around the rear door handle and armrest area.
  • Use a trim panel removal tool to pop the door panel clips loose around the edges.
  • Lift the panel straight up to unhook it from the upper window ledge.
  • Disconnect the electrical connectors for the window switch and any speaker wiring.

Step 2: Remove the water shield

  • Carefully peel back the plastic water shield by hand or with a flat trim tool.
  • Keep the adhesive clean so it can be reused.
  • Do not tear the moisture barrier.

Step 3: Disconnect the lock actuator linkage

  • Use needle-nose pliers to release the lock rod retaining clip from the latch assembly.
  • Unhook the linkage rods from the actuator/latch assembly.

Step 4: Remove the latch assembly

  • Use a 10mm socket with an extension to remove the latch mounting bolts from the door edge.
  • Slide the latch assembly out through the access opening in the door.
  • If needed, rotate the assembly slightly to clear the inner door shell.
  • Torque on install: 9 Nm (80 in-lbs)

Step 5: Install the new actuator/latch assembly

  • Transfer any linkage rods to the new assembly.
  • Position the new latch assembly into the door and start the bolts by hand.
  • Use a 10mm socket to tighten the bolts evenly.
  • Torque to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs)

Step 6: Reconnect the linkage and test fit

  • Reattach the lock rod and any latch rods to the new actuator.
  • Make sure the retaining clip is fully seated.
  • Move the rods by hand to confirm smooth motion.

Step 7: Reassemble the door

  • Press the water shield back into place.
  • Reconnect the electrical connectors for the door panel.
  • Hang the panel on the upper window ledge first, then align the clips.
  • Use firm pressure around the edges to snap all clips back in.
  • Reinstall the screws with a 7mm socket.

Step 8: Reconnect battery and verify operation

  • Reconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm socket.
  • Test the key fob, interior lock switch, and manual lock button.
  • Open and close the door several times to confirm the latch is working correctly.

✅ After Repair

  • Verify the door locks and unlocks from both the switch and the key fob.
  • Make sure the door opens from inside and outside without sticking.
  • Listen for abnormal clicking or grinding from the latch.
  • Confirm the interior door panel is fully secured and does not rattle.
