🔧 Rear Door Lock Actuator - Replacement

The rear door lock actuator is built into the latch assembly on your Ram, so this repair is usually done by removing the door trim panel, disconnecting the latch cables and wiring, then swapping the latch/actuator unit. A failing actuator can cause slow locking, no lock/unlock, or a door that won’t latch correctly.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-3 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Disconnect the negative battery cable before removing the door trim. The door contains electrical connectors and may have side airbag wiring.
  • Wait at least 2 minutes after disconnecting the battery before unplugging door connectors.
  • Support the door panel so you do not tear the wiring or break the clips.
  • Do not force the latch rods or electrical plugs.
  • If the window glass is loose or down, keep hands clear of the regulator track.

  • Door panel clip set - Qty: 1 set
  • Door handle bezel clips - Qty: 1 set
  • Foam vapor barrier adhesive - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and open the rear door fully.
  • Turn the ignition off and remove the key fob from the vehicle.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm socket.
  • Keep the window in the fully up position if possible.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the rear door trim panel

  • Use a trim panel removal tool to pop up the bezel and remove the trim fasteners around the panel.
  • Remove the screws with a 7mm socket and a Phillips screwdriver.
  • Lift the panel upward to release it from the window ledge.
  • Unplug the electrical connectors slowly.
  • Work around the edge, not the center.
  • Torque on reassembly: 2 N·m (18 in-lbs) for trim screws.

Step 2: Remove the moisture barrier

  • Peel back the door vapor barrier carefully using a flat-blade trim tool.
  • Do not tear it; you will need it to keep water out.
  • If the adhesive is damaged, replace it with new foam vapor barrier adhesive.

Step 3: Disconnect the latch and actuator

  • Use needle-nose pliers to remove the rod clips from the inside handle and lock linkage.
  • Unplug the actuator electrical connector by pressing the lock tab first.
  • Remove the latch mounting bolts with a 10mm socket and short extension.
  • Torque on reassembly: 8 N·m (71 in-lbs) for latch bolts.

Step 4: Remove the latch/actuator assembly

  • Slide the latch assembly out through the access opening in the door.
  • If it hangs up, rotate it slightly and guide it past the inner door brace.
  • Keep the rods in the same orientation.

Step 5: Install the new actuator assembly

  • Position the new rear door latch and lock actuator assembly in the door.
  • Reconnect the lock linkage rods and secure the clips.
  • Plug in the electrical connector until it clicks.
  • Install the mounting bolts by hand first, then tighten with a 10mm socket.
  • Torque to 8 N·m (71 in-lbs).

Step 6: Reinstall the door barrier and trim panel

  • Press the vapor barrier back into place.
  • Reconnect all electrical plugs before setting the panel on the door.
  • Hang the panel on the window ledge first, then press in the clips with your hands.
  • Reinstall screws with a 7mm socket and Phillips screwdriver.
  • Reinstall any bezels or covers with the trim panel removal tool.

Step 7: Restore power and test the repair

  • Reconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm socket.
  • Use the key fob and the interior switch to lock and unlock the rear door several times.
  • Open and close the door to confirm the latch works smoothly.
  • Check that the inside and outside handles operate normally.

✅ After Repair

  • Verify the rear door locks and unlocks from the key fob.
  • Make sure the door closes securely and does not bounce back open.
  • Listen for any binding or clicking from the latch area.
  • Confirm the window, speaker, and any switches in the door still work.
