🔧 Radiator Hose - Hose Replacement

Replacing the radiator hose on your Rogue means draining enough coolant to remove the old hose, installing the new hose, then refilling and bleeding the cooling system. This repair is important because a leaking hose can cause overheating very quickly.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1.5-2.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Let the engine go completely cold before opening the cooling system. Hot coolant can spray out under pressure.
  • Do not remove the radiator cap when the engine is hot.
  • Coolant is toxic. Keep it away from pets, kids, and painted surfaces.
  • If you lift the vehicle, support it with jack stands before getting underneath.
  • Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Drain pan
  • Coolant funnel
  • Hose clamp pliers
  • Flat-blade screwdriver
  • Pliers
  • Pick tool
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Jack stands
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Shop towels

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Radiator hose - Qty: 1
  • Engine coolant - Qty: 1 to 2 gallons
  • Radiator hose clamps - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Let the engine cool fully.
  • Place a drain pan under the radiator area before opening the cooling system.
  • Have the new coolant ready so you can refill right away after the hose is installed.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Drain the coolant

  • Use a drain pan under the radiator.
  • Open the radiator drain cock if equipped, or remove the lower hose carefully to drain coolant into the pan.
  • Drain enough coolant so the level is below the hose you are replacing.
  • Keep the coolant clean if you plan to reuse it.

Step 2: Remove access pieces if needed

  • Use a trim clip removal tool and flat-blade screwdriver to remove any engine cover or splash shield blocking the hose.
  • Set fasteners aside in order so they go back in the right place.

Step 3: Remove the old hose

  • Use hose clamp pliers or pliers to compress the spring clamps and slide them back on the hose.
  • Twist the hose gently to break it free from the radiator neck and engine fitting.
  • If it is stuck, use a pick tool carefully at the hose edge to help release it.
  • Pull the old hose off and drain any remaining coolant into the pan.

Step 4: Install the new hose

  • Compare the new hose to the old one to make sure the shape and length match.
  • Slide the clamps onto the new hose first.
  • Push the hose fully onto the radiator and engine fittings until it seats against the stop.
  • Move the clamps into the same location as the originals.
  • Make sure the hose is not twisted.

Step 5: Reinstall covers and check fit

  • Reinstall any splash shields or covers using the trim clip removal tool and flat-blade screwdriver.
  • Check that the hose is clear of belts, fans, and hot exhaust parts.

Step 6: Refill the cooling system

  • Use a coolant funnel to refill with the correct engine coolant.
  • Fill slowly to reduce trapped air.
  • If your coolant level drops after a few minutes, top it off again.
  • Torque: No hose clamp torque spec applies for spring clamps.

Step 7: Bleed air from the system

  • Start the engine and let it idle with the radiator cap installed only if the service procedure allows it, or with the funnel in place if using a spill-free funnel.
  • Set the heater to hot and the blower to low.
  • Watch for bubbles in the funnel and top off coolant as the level drops.
  • When the engine reaches normal operating temperature, check for stable heat from the vents.

Step 8: Final inspection

  • Shut the engine off and let it cool.
  • Check the hose ends, clamps, and radiator for leaks.
  • Verify the coolant level in the reservoir and top off if needed.

✅ After Repair

  • Drive the vehicle and watch the temperature gauge.
  • Recheck coolant level after the first heat cycle and again the next day.
  • Look under the front of the vehicle for any fresh coolant spots.
  • If the engine overheats or coolant drops fast, stop driving and recheck the hose installation.
