- Let the engine cool completely (best: overnight).
- Remove the coolant surge tank cap only when cool. This relieves pressure slowly.
- Tip: Take a photo of hose routing first.
šØ Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Identify which radiator hose youāre replacing
- The upper hose usually runs from the top of the radiator to the engine area (easier from above).
- The lower hose runs from the bottom of the radiator (often easier from underneath after removing an underbody shield).

Step 2: Raise the front (if needed for access)
- Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the front at the proper front jacking point.
- Place jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) under the front support points and lower onto them.
Step 3: Remove the lower splash shield (mainly for the lower hose)
- Use a trim clip removal tool to pop out plastic retainers.
- Use an 8mm socket with a 1/4" drive ratchet to remove small bolts/screws.
- Set the shield and clips aside in a small pile.
Step 4: Drain coolant to below hose level
- Place a drain pan (at least 2-gallon) under the radiator area.
- Slowly remove the coolant surge tank cap by hand.
- If equipped with a drain cock, open it using a flat-blade screwdriver (turn gentlyāplastic can break).
- If thereās no usable drain, you can carefully loosen the hose clamp and let coolant drain from the hose connection into the pan.
Step 5: Release the hose clamps
- Use hose clamp pliers to compress the spring clamp and slide it back on the hose.
- If you have a worm-gear clamp (screw type), loosen it with an 8mm socket or flat-blade screwdriver.
- Tip: Put the clamp where you can reach it later.
Step 6: Remove the old hose (without damaging fittings)
- Twist the hose by hand to break it loose.
- If itās stuck, use a pick tool to gently lift the hose edge to let air in (do not gouge the plastic/rubber fitting).
- Pull the hose off and aim it into the drain pan to catch remaining coolant.
- Wipe the radiator neck and engine-side neck with shop towels.
Step 7: Install the new hose and clamps
- Compare the new hose to the old one (same bends, same diameter).
- Slide new clamps onto the hose first.
- Push the hose fully onto each fitting until it bottoms out.
- Position the clamp behind the raised ābeadā of the fitting (this bead keeps the hose from slipping off).
- If using worm-gear clamps, tighten with a 8mm socket snugly (do not crush the hose).
Step 8: Reinstall shields and lower the XT5
- Reinstall the splash shield using the 8mm socket and trim clip removal tool (to reinstall push-clips).
- Use the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift slightly, remove jack stands, and lower the vehicle.
Step 9: Refill coolant
- Use a funnel to add Dex-Cool coolant (50/50 premix) into the surge tank to the correct mark.
- If youāre mixing concentrate, use distilled water (not tap water).
Step 10: Bleed air and check for leaks
- Start the engine and set HVAC to MAX HEAT with the fan on medium.
- Let the engine idle and watch the temperature gauge.
- As it warms up, the coolant level may dropātop off using the funnel.
- Inspect both hose ends for seepage with a flashlight and shop towels.
- Once fully warm, shut off, let cool, then recheck level and add as needed.

- Recheck coolant level the next morning when cold and top off if needed.
