🔧 Camry - Radiator Hose Replacement

Replacing a radiator hose means removing the old hose and clamps, cleaning the fittings, then installing the new hose and refilling/bleeding the cooling system. This stops coolant leaks and prevents overheating from a split or soft hose.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1-2 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🛑 Never open the radiator cap on a hot engine; hot coolant can spray and burn you.
  • Let the engine cool fully (upper hose should feel cool).
  • Use jack stands if you lift the car; never rely on a jack alone.
  • Keep coolant away from kids/pets; it’s toxic and tastes sweet.
  • Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Drain pan (at least 2-gallon)
  • Funnel
  • Hose clamp pliers (specialty)
  • Slip-joint pliers
  • Flat-blade screwdriver
  • Pick tool (small hook) (specialty)
  • Razor scraper or plastic scraper
  • Shop towels
  • Floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (pair, rated 2-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Radiator hose (upper or lower, as applicable) - Qty: 1
  • Hose clamps (spring-style or worm-gear, as applicable) - Qty: 2
  • Toyota Super Long Life Coolant (pink, premixed 50/50) - Qty: 1-2 gallons

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Let the engine cool completely.
  • Set the heater to HOT (this helps air purge during refill).
  • Place a drain pan under the front of the car before loosening anything.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Identify which hose you’re replacing

  • The upper radiator hose runs from the top of the radiator to the engine.
  • The lower radiator hose runs from the bottom of the radiator down to the engine.
  • Upper is easier; lower usually needs lifting.

Step 2: Relieve any leftover pressure (engine COLD)

  • Use your hand to slowly loosen the radiator cap.
  • If you hear hissing, stop and wait until it fully releases.
  • Torque: N/A (cap is hand-tight only).

Step 3: Drain enough coolant to get below the hose level

  • Position the drain pan under the radiator.
  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver only if needed to open the radiator drain cock (some are hand-turn).
  • Drain until coolant level is below the hose you’re removing.
  • Torque: N/A (drain cock is closed snug by hand; do not overtighten).

Step 4: Gain access (mainly for the lower hose)

  • If needed, lift the front using a floor jack and support with jack stands.
  • Use wheel chocks to prevent rolling.
  • Torque: N/A (support equipment only).

Step 5: Remove the hose clamps

  • If you have spring clamps: use hose clamp pliers (specialty) to squeeze the tabs, then slide the clamp back on the hose.
  • If you have worm-gear clamps: use a flat-blade screwdriver to loosen, then slide the clamp back.
  • Torque: N/A (spring clamp). For worm-gear clamp, tighten until snug—do not strip the clamp.

Step 6: Break the hose free and remove it

  • Twist the hose by hand to break the seal.
  • If it’s stuck, carefully work a pick tool (small hook) (specialty) between the hose and the fitting to let air in, then twist again.
  • Use slip-joint pliers only on the hose if you plan to discard it (pliers can damage a reusable hose).
  • Don’t pry hard on the radiator neck.

Step 7: Clean and inspect the fittings

  • Use shop towels to wipe the radiator and engine hose fittings.
  • Remove crusty buildup carefully with a plastic scraper or razor scraper (go gentle so you don’t gouge the metal/plastic).
  • Torque: N/A.

Step 8: Install the new hose and position clamps

  • Slide the clamps onto the hose first.
  • Push the new hose fully onto the radiator fitting and the engine fitting until it bottoms out.
  • Position clamps behind the raised bead on the fitting (that bead helps prevent leaks).
  • If using worm-gear clamps, tighten with a flat-blade screwdriver until snug.
  • Torque: N/A (spring clamp). Worm-gear clamp: snug only; do not overtighten.

Step 9: Refill coolant

  • Close the drain cock (hand-snug) and place a funnel in the radiator fill neck.
  • Slowly pour in Toyota Super Long Life Coolant (pink, premixed 50/50) until the radiator is full.
  • Fill the overflow reservoir to the FULL line.
  • Torque: N/A.

Step 10: Bleed air and check for leaks

  • Leave the radiator cap off.
  • Start the engine and let it idle; set cabin heat to HOT.
  • Watch the coolant level in the radiator; add coolant with the funnel as it drops.
  • Once the thermostat opens (upper hose gets hot), you may see bubbles; keep topping up until bubbling slows.
  • Install the radiator cap hand-tight.
  • Torque: N/A (cap is hand-tight only).

âś… After Repair

  • Test drive 10–15 minutes, then park and inspect the hose ends for seepage.
  • After the engine cools fully, recheck the radiator level and reservoir level; top off as needed.
  • Watch the temperature gauge for the next few trips; overheating means there’s still air or a leak.
  • Dispose of old coolant properly (auto parts store recycling).

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $220-$450 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $40-$140 (parts only)

You Save: $180-$310 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 1-2 hours.
