🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Cool the Engine and Remove the Radiator Cap
- Use your gloved hand to carefully squeeze the upper radiator hose. It should feel cool and not pressurized.
- Place clean shop towels around the radiator cap area.
- Slowly turn the radiator cap to the first stop by hand to release any leftover pressure.
- Remove the radiator cap fully once pressure is gone.
- Cold engine only.
Step 2: Position the Drain Pan
- Slide the drain pan 2-gallon minimum under the radiator drain area and hose connection you are working on.
- If replacing the lower hose, place the pan directly under the lower radiator outlet because more coolant will drain.
Step 3: Drain Some Coolant
- Use your hand or slip-joint pliers 10-inch if needed to open the radiator drain petcock slowly.
- Drain enough coolant so the level drops below the hose you are replacing.
- Close the drain petcock by hand once flow slows.
- If the splash shield blocks access, use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the fasteners, then lower the shield.
- Reinstall splash shield fasteners later and torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
Step 4: Move the Hose Clamps Back
- Use hose clamp pliers to squeeze the spring clamp tabs together.
- Slide each clamp several inches away from the hose end.
- If screw-style clamps are installed, use a flathead screwdriver 6-inch to loosen them.
- Do not damage the radiator neck. It can crack if twisted too hard.
Step 5: Remove the Old Radiator Hose
- Twist the hose gently by hand to break it loose.
- If it is stuck, use a pick tool 90-degree to carefully lift the hose edge and let air in.
- Pull the hose off the radiator and engine fittings.
- Use clean shop towels to wipe spilled coolant.
- Do not pry on plastic radiator necks.
Step 6: Clean the Hose Connections
- Use clean shop towels to wipe the radiator and engine hose fittings clean.
- Check the fittings for corrosion, cracks, or old rubber stuck to the surface.
- Use the pick tool 90-degree lightly only if old rubber is stuck.
- The sealing surface must be smooth before installing the new hose.
Step 7: Install the New Radiator Hose
- Compare the new radiator hose to the old hose before installing it.
- Slide the clamps onto the new hose first.
- Push the hose fully onto the radiator and engine fittings by hand.
- Use hose clamp pliers to move spring clamps into their original positions behind the raised bead on each fitting.
- If using screw-style clamps, tighten with a flathead screwdriver 6-inch until snug. Do not overtighten.
- Hose must sit fully past the bead.
Step 8: Refill the Cooling System
- Install the funnel spill-free coolant fill kit onto the radiator filler neck or coolant fill point.
- Pour Toyota-compatible long-life coolant premix slowly into the funnel.
- Fill until the radiator stays full and the coolant reservoir is at the “FULL” mark.
- Do not mix unknown coolant types. Use the correct Toyota-compatible long-life coolant.
Step 9: Bleed Air from the Cooling System
- Leave the funnel spill-free coolant fill kit installed.
- Start the engine and set the heater to full hot with the blower on low.
- Let the engine idle while watching the coolant level in the funnel.
- When the thermostat opens, coolant level may drop. Add more coolant as needed.
- Squeeze the upper radiator hose gently by hand a few times to help move trapped air.
- Watch for air bubbles in the funnel. Continue until bubbling slows.
- Install the radiator cap by hand once coolant level is stable.
Step 10: Reinstall Any Removed Shielding
- If the splash shield was removed, lift it back into position.
- Use the 10mm socket, 3/8-inch ratchet, and 3/8-inch torque wrench to reinstall the fasteners.
- Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Let the engine reach normal operating temperature while parked.
- 👀 Check both ends of the new hose for leaks.
- 🌡️ Confirm the temperature gauge stays normal and the heater blows warm air.
- 🧊 After the engine cools completely, recheck the coolant reservoir level and top off if needed.
