🔧 Radiator Hose - Replacement

The radiator hose on your Silverado carries coolant between the engine and radiator. If it is leaking, swollen, soft, or cracked, replace it before it fails and overheats the engine. This guide covers both the upper and lower radiator hose so you can follow the one you need.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1-2 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Let the engine cool completely before opening the cooling system.
  • Never remove the radiator cap on a hot engine.
  • Coolant is toxic; keep it away from children and pets.
  • Support the truck safely if you need extra access under the front end.
  • Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Pliers
  • Flat-blade screwdriver
  • Drain pan
  • Funnel
  • Shop towels
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Jack and jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Upper radiator hose - Qty: 1
  • Lower radiator hose - Qty: 1
  • Coolant - Qty: 1-2 gallons
  • New hose clamps - Qty: 2-4

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Let the engine cool fully.
  • Place a drain pan under the radiator.
  • Drain enough coolant to get below the hose you are replacing.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Drain coolant to a safe level

  • Use a drain pan under the radiator drain area.
  • If your truck has a radiator petcock, open it carefully to drain coolant.
  • If there is no easy drain access, loosen the lower hose slowly and drain coolant into the pan.
  • Drain less than you think you need.

Step 2: Remove the old hose clamps

  • Use pliers to squeeze the spring clamps and slide them back on the hose.
  • If your truck has worm-style clamps, use a flat-blade screwdriver to loosen them.
  • Move the clamps far enough back so the hose can come off cleanly.

Step 3: Remove the hose

  • Twist the hose gently to break it loose.
  • Pull it off the radiator neck and engine fitting.
  • If it is stuck, use a flat-blade screwdriver carefully under the hose edge to lift it free.
  • Do not damage the plastic radiator neck or aluminum pipe.

Step 4: Clean the hose connections

  • Use shop towels to clean the radiator neck and engine fitting.
  • Remove any old rubber pieces, dirt, or dried coolant.
  • Clean sealing surfaces prevent leaks.

Step 5: Install the new hose

  • Compare the new hose to the old one before installing.
  • Slide the clamps onto the hose first, then push the hose fully onto both fittings.
  • Make sure the hose seats past the raised lip on each fitting.
  • Position the clamps in the same spot as the originals.

Step 6: Tighten and inspect

  • Use pliers to release spring clamps into place, or a flat-blade screwdriver to tighten worm clamps.
  • No torque spec applies to standard hose clamps.
  • Make sure the hose is not twisted or rubbing on anything sharp or hot.

Step 7: Refill and bleed the cooling system

  • Use a funnel to refill with the correct coolant mix.
  • Fill slowly to reduce air pockets.
  • Start the engine and let it idle with the heater set to hot.
  • Top off the coolant as the level drops.

Step 8: Check for leaks

  • Inspect both ends of the hose while the engine runs.
  • Look for drips, seepage, or a loose clamp.
  • Shut the engine off and recheck the coolant level after it cools.

✅ After Repair

  • Drive the truck for a short test run.
  • Watch the temperature gauge closely.
  • Recheck coolant level after a full cool-down.
  • Inspect again over the next few drives for any seepage.
