How to Replace the Power Steering Pump on a 2018 Ram 3500 (Bleed & Refill Guide)
Step-by-step instructions with required tools/parts, Hydro-Boost vs vacuum notes, and proper bleeding tips
š§ 3500 - Power Steering Pump Replacement
On your 3500, the power steering pump is belt-driven and supplies hydraulic pressure to the steering gear (and on some trucks, the brake booster too). Replacing it involves removing the serpentine belt, disconnecting the pressure/return lines, swapping the pump, then refilling and bleeding the system to prevent noise and steering/brake assist issues.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2.0-4.0 hours
ā ļø Safety & Precautions
- ā ļø Let the engine cool fully before working near the belt and exhaust.
- ā ļø Power steering fluid under pressure can sprayāwear eye protection and relieve pressure by keeping the engine OFF before cracking any line.
- ā ļø Support the truck securely if you raise itānever rely on a jack alone.
- ā ļø Keep fluid off the serpentine belt and pulleys; it can cause belt slip and loss of steering assist.
- ā Battery disconnect is not usually required, but disconnect the negative terminal if your hands/tools will be near the starter or main power cables.

š Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and chock the rear wheels.
- Turn the steering wheel so the front wheels point straight ahead.
- Place a drain pan under the front of the engine where the pump and hoses sit.
- If you lift the front for access, raise with a floor jack and support with jack stands under the frame.
šØ Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm your brake booster type (important)
- Look at the driver-side firewall behind the master cylinder.
- If you see a large round ācanā booster, thatās a vacuum booster.
- If you see a smaller unit with power steering hoses going to it, thatās Hydro-Boost (steering pump also feeds brake assist).
- Reply with: Vacuum booster or Hydro-Boost so I can give you the correct bleeding and safety steps.
Step 2: Check whether your replacement pump comes with a pulley
- Some pumps come ābareā (no pulley). Some come with the pulley installed.
- If itās bare, you must transfer your pulley using a pulley puller/installer (a tool that removes/presses the pulley on without damaging the pump shaft).
- Reply with: Pulley included or No pulley.
Step 3: Stop here so I can provide exact, trim-correct steps and torque specs
- Once you answer the two items above, Iāll lay out the full removal/installation sequence for your 3500, including the correct bleed procedure and Torque to XX Nm (YY ft-lbs) values for the pump, line fittings, and any brackets.
ā After Repair
- Do not drive until the system is properly filled and bledāair in the system can cause loud whining and poor assist.
- Recheck fluid level after a short test drive and inspect all fittings/hoses for seepage.
