🔧 Power Steering Pump - Replacement

The power steering pump on your Silverado is belt-driven and supplies hydraulic pressure for steering assist. If it’s noisy, leaking, or hard to steer, replacing the pump and flushing the fluid usually fixes it. You’ll need to remove the belt, disconnect the fluid lines, and swap the pump carefully.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Disconnect the negative battery cable before starting.
  • Let the engine cool before working near the belt, pump, or exhaust.
  • Keep dirt out of the power steering system. Clean fittings before disconnecting lines.
  • Support the truck safely if you need access from underneath.
  • Use eye protection. Power steering fluid can spray under pressure.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves
  • 10mm socket
  • 13mm socket
  • 15mm socket
  • 18mm socket
  • 3/8-inch ratchet
  • 1/2-inch ratchet
  • Short extension
  • Breaker bar
  • Belt tensioner tool
  • Drain pan
  • Line wrench set
  • Torque wrench
  • Funnel
  • Shop towels
  • Trim clip removal tool

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Power steering pump - Qty: 1
  • Power steering pump pulley - Qty: 1 if not included
  • Power steering pump mounting bolts - Qty: 1 set
  • Power steering pressure hose O-ring - Qty: 1
  • Power steering return hose clamp - Qty: 1 if needed
  • Power steering fluid - Qty: 2-3 quarts

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and disconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Place a drain pan under the pump area.
  • Remove the serpentine belt routing from the underhood label. Take a photo first.
  • If the truck has a fan shroud or splash shield blocking access, remove it as needed.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the serpentine belt

  • Use a belt tensioner tool or 1/2-inch breaker bar to relieve tension on the serpentine belt.
  • Slip the belt off the power steering pump pulley and slowly release the tensioner.
  • Set the belt aside and inspect it for cracks or glazing.

Step 2: Drain and disconnect the hoses

  • Use a line wrench to loosen the pressure hose fitting at the pump.
  • Use pliers or a small pick if the return hose has a spring clamp.
  • Drain fluid into the drain pan and cap or wrap the lines to keep dirt out.
  • Replace the pressure line O-ring before reassembly.

Step 3: Remove the pump

  • Use a 13mm socket and 15mm socket to remove the pump mounting bolts.
  • Support the pump as you remove the last bolt.
  • Lift the pump out of the bracket area carefully.
  • Torque spec on reassembly: Pump mounting bolts to 50 Nm (37 ft-lbs).

Step 4: Transfer the pulley if needed

  • If the new pump does not come with a pulley, use a power steering pulley puller/installer (specialty) to move the pulley over.
  • Keep the pulley aligned so it does not wobble.
  • Press it on straight.

Step 5: Install the new pump

  • Position the new pump in the bracket using the 13mm socket and 15mm socket to start the bolts by hand.
  • Reconnect the pressure and return hoses.
  • Use a line wrench to snug the pressure fitting.
  • Torque spec on reassembly: Pressure hose fitting to 40 Nm (30 ft-lbs).
  • Tighten all pump bolts to 50 Nm (37 ft-lbs).

Step 6: Reinstall the belt

  • Use the belt tensioner tool or breaker bar to move the tensioner again.
  • Route the belt over the pulleys exactly as shown on the belt diagram.
  • Double-check that the belt is fully seated in every pulley groove.

Step 7: Refill and bleed the system

  • Use a funnel to fill the reservoir with the correct power steering fluid.
  • With the front wheels off the ground, slowly turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock several times.
  • Keep the reservoir from running dry while bleeding the air out.
  • Install the cap and clean any spilled fluid with shop towels.

✅ After Repair

  • Reconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Start the engine and check for leaks at both hose connections.
  • Listen for whining or squealing from the pump or belt.
  • Turn the steering wheel slowly left and right to confirm smooth assist.
  • Recheck the fluid level after a short test drive and top off if needed.
