🔧 Oxygen Sensor - Replacement

This job replaces a failed oxygen sensor so the engine computer can read exhaust mixture correctly again. On your Sierra, the sensor may be upstream or downstream, and the exact access point changes a bit by location, but the removal and install process is the same.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • The exhaust and sensor can be extremely hot. Let the truck cool fully before starting.
  • Use jack stands if you raise the truck. Never rely on a floor jack alone.
  • Do not touch the new sensor tip with dirty hands or get anti-seize on the sensing element.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable only if you need extra safety around connectors.
  • If the sensor is seized, use penetrating oil and patience. Do not twist hard on the harness.

  • 3/8-inch ratchet
  • 3-inch extension
  • Penetrating oil
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and let the exhaust cool completely.
  • Set the parking brake and chock the wheels.
  • If the sensor is on the exhaust pipe under the truck, raise it safely with a floor jack and support it with jack stands.
  • Spray penetrating oil on the sensor threads and let it soak for a few minutes if rust is present.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the sensor

  • Find the oxygen sensor you are replacing. It will be threaded into the exhaust pipe or exhaust manifold.
  • Follow the sensor wire to the electrical connector before loosening anything.
  • Take a quick photo first.

Step 2: Disconnect the electrical connector

  • Use your hands to release the connector lock and unplug the sensor harness.
  • Do not pull on the wire itself.
  • If the connector is clipped to the body or frame, gently release the clip by hand first.

Step 3: Remove the old sensor

  • Use the oxygen sensor socket 7/8" (22mm) with the 3/8-inch ratchet and 3-inch extension to loosen the sensor.
  • Turn counterclockwise to remove it from the exhaust.
  • If it is tight, apply more penetrating oil and work it back and forth slowly.
  • Remove the sensor and keep the wire clear of hot or sharp edges.

Step 4: Install the new sensor

  • Start the new sensor by hand to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use the same oxygen sensor socket 7/8" (22mm) to snug it down.
  • Torque to 41 Nm (30 ft-lbs).
  • Hand-starting prevents expensive thread damage.

Step 5: Reconnect and secure the harness

  • Plug the connector back in until it clicks.
  • Route the wire exactly like the original so it stays away from the exhaust and moving parts.
  • Make sure all clips are fully seated.

Step 6: Lower the truck and verify repair

  • If you raised the truck, remove the jack stands and lower it safely.
  • Start the engine and check for exhaust leaks or warning lights.
  • If a scan tool is available, clear stored codes and confirm the sensor data looks normal.

✅ After Repair

  • Drive the truck for a short test and make sure the check engine light stays off.
  • If the light returns, recheck the connector and the sensor location.
  • After a few drive cycles, confirm no new oxygen sensor codes are present.
