🔧 Jetta - Outer Tie Rod End Replacement

The outer tie rod end connects your steering rack to the steering knuckle at the wheel. Replacing it restores tight steering and fixes looseness or clunking, but it will affect wheel alignment, so you’ll need an alignment right after.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.0-2.0 hours (per side)

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🛑 Support the car with jack stands—never rely on a floor jack alone.
  • 🛑 Keep hands clear when separating the taper (it can “pop” loose suddenly).
  • 🛑 Get a professional alignment after replacement to prevent tire wear and pulling.
  • 🛑 No battery disconnect is required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Wheel chocks
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • 17mm socket
  • Breaker bar
  • Torque wrench (20-200 Nm range)
  • 21mm socket
  • 19mm open-end wrench
  • Tie rod end puller (specialty)
  • Pliers
  • Wire brush
  • Penetrating oil
  • Paint marker
  • Tape measure
  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Outer tie rod end - Qty: 1
  • Self-locking tie rod end nut - Qty: 1
  • Tie rod jam nut - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • 🧭 Park on level ground, straighten the steering wheel, and chock the rear wheels.
  • 🧼 Spray penetrating oil on the tie rod end threads and the jam nut. Let it soak 5-10 minutes.
  • 📏 Pre-mark alignment: use a paint marker to mark the jam nut position on the inner tie rod threads, and measure from the tie rod end to a fixed point (like the jam nut). This helps you install the new one close to the old toe setting.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen lug bolts and raise the front

  • Use a 17mm socket and breaker bar to loosen the wheel lug bolts 1/2 turn while the tire is on the ground.
  • Lift the front with a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) and support it with jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).
  • Remove the wheel using the 17mm socket.

Step 2: Break the jam nut loose

  • Use a wire brush to clean exposed threads at the jam nut.
  • Hold the tie rod end with a 19mm open-end wrench (on the flats) and crack the jam nut loose with the 19mm open-end wrench.
  • Don’t spin it far—just loosen it.

Step 3: Remove the tie rod end nut from the steering knuckle

  • Use a 21mm socket and remove the nut on the tie rod end stud (where it goes into the steering knuckle).
  • If the stud spins, apply upward pressure on the tie rod end while turning the nut (use pliers carefully if needed).

Step 4: Separate the tie rod end from the knuckle

  • Install a tie rod end puller (specialty) and tighten it until the tapered stud pops free.
  • A puller avoids boot damage.

Step 5: Count turns and remove the old tie rod end

  • Use the paint marker to add a second reference mark on the threads if needed.
  • Unscrew the tie rod end from the inner tie rod, counting the turns (example: 16.5 turns). Write the number down.

Step 6: Install the new tie rod end to the same position

  • Thread the new tie rod end on by hand the exact same number of turns you counted.
  • Snug the jam nut by hand against the tie rod end.

Step 7: Attach the tie rod end to the steering knuckle

  • Insert the stud into the steering knuckle.
  • Install the new self-locking nut by hand, then tighten with a 21mm socket.
  • Torque to 60 Nm (44 ft-lbs) + 90° using a torque wrench (then turn an additional quarter-turn).

Step 8: Tighten the jam nut

  • Hold the tie rod end flats with a 19mm open-end wrench and tighten the jam nut with the 19mm open-end wrench.
  • Torque to 50 Nm (37 ft-lbs).

Step 9: Reinstall the wheel and lower the car

  • Reinstall the wheel and hand-thread lug bolts.
  • Lower the car, then torque lug bolts in a star pattern with a torque wrench.
  • Torque to 120 Nm (89 ft-lbs).

âś… After Repair

  • 🧪 Start the car and turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock to confirm nothing binds or rubs.
  • đźš— Do a slow test drive and check for steering pull, off-center wheel, or clunks.
  • 🛞 Get a 4-wheel alignment as soon as possible (same day if you can).
  • 🔍 Recheck the jam nut and lug bolt torque after 25-50 miles.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $250-$500 (parts + labor + alignment)

DIY Cost: $40-$140 (parts only, alignment not included)

You Save: $110-$360 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 1.0-2.0 hours.
