🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen lug bolts and raise the front

• Use a 17mm socket and breaker bar to loosen the wheel lug bolts 1/2 turn while the tire is on the ground.
• Lift the front with a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) and support it with jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).
• Remove the wheel using the 17mm socket.

Step 2: Break the jam nut loose

• Use a wire brush to clean exposed threads at the jam nut.
• Hold the tie rod end with a 19mm open-end wrench (on the flats) and crack the jam nut loose with the 19mm open-end wrench.
• Don’t spin it far—just loosen it.

Step 3: Remove the tie rod end nut from the steering knuckle

• Use a 21mm socket and remove the nut on the tie rod end stud (where it goes into the steering knuckle).
• If the stud spins, apply upward pressure on the tie rod end while turning the nut (use pliers carefully if needed).

Step 4: Separate the tie rod end from the knuckle

• Install a tie rod end puller (specialty) and tighten it until the tapered stud pops free.
• A puller avoids boot damage.

Step 5: Count turns and remove the old tie rod end

• Use the paint marker to add a second reference mark on the threads if needed.
• Unscrew the tie rod end from the inner tie rod, counting the turns (example: 16.5 turns). Write the number down.

Step 6: Install the new tie rod end to the same position

• Thread the new tie rod end on by hand the exact same number of turns you counted.
• Snug the jam nut by hand against the tie rod end.

Step 7: Attach the tie rod end to the steering knuckle

• Insert the stud into the steering knuckle.
• Install the new self-locking nut by hand, then tighten with a 21mm socket.
• Torque to 60 Nm (44 ft-lbs) + 90° using a torque wrench (then turn an additional quarter-turn).

Step 8: Tighten the jam nut

• Hold the tie rod end flats with a 19mm open-end wrench and tighten the jam nut with the 19mm open-end wrench.
• Torque to 50 Nm (37 ft-lbs).

Step 9: Reinstall the wheel and lower the car

• Reinstall the wheel and hand-thread lug bolts.
• Lower the car, then torque lug bolts in a star pattern with a torque wrench.
• Torque to 120 Nm (89 ft-lbs).
