🔧 Tie Rod End - Replacement

The outer tie rod end connects the steering rack to the front wheel knuckle. If it is loose or worn, you may feel steering play, tire wear, or a clunk over bumps. After replacement, the front alignment must be checked and adjusted.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-2.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Raise the front of the vehicle on level ground and support it with jack stands. Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack.
  • Keep hands clear of the steering knuckle while separating the tie rod end.
  • Mark the old tie rod position before removal to help preserve toe setting. Close enough for a short drive.
  • Do not drive far after the repair until the alignment is checked.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves
  • 21mm socket
  • 19mm wrench
  • 17mm wrench
  • Torque wrench
  • Tie rod end puller (specialty)
  • Ball joint separator (specialty)
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Paint marker
  • Penetrating oil

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Outer tie rod end - Qty: 1
  • Outer tie rod end lock nut - Qty: 1
  • Cotter pin - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and chock the rear wheels.
  • Loosen the front wheel lug nuts slightly before lifting the vehicle.
  • Spray penetrating oil on the tie rod end nut and jam nut before starting.
  • Mark the position of the tie rod end on the threaded shaft with a paint marker.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift and secure the front end

  • Use the floor jack to lift the front of your Tacoma by the proper frame point.
  • Support it with jack stands under the frame.
  • Remove the front wheel with the 21mm socket.

Step 2: Loosen the jam nut

  • Use a 19mm wrench on the jam nut and a 17mm wrench on the tie rod end flats if needed.
  • Loosen the jam nut without changing the tie rod length any more than necessary.
  • Hold the inner rod steady.

Step 3: Remove the cotter pin and castle nut

  • Use needle-nose pliers to remove the cotter pin from the tie rod end stud.
  • Remove the castle nut with the 19mm socket.
  • Leave the nut threaded on a few turns if the stud is still tight in the knuckle.

Step 4: Separate the tie rod end from the knuckle

  • Use a tie rod end puller (specialty) to press the stud out of the steering knuckle.
  • If needed, use a ball joint separator (specialty) with care.
  • Once free, remove the nut and pull the tie rod end out of the knuckle.

Step 5: Remove the old tie rod end

  • Count the exact number of turns it takes to remove the old tie rod end from the inner tie rod.
  • Use the 19mm wrench to spin it off.
  • Install the new tie rod end the same number of turns as a starting point.

Step 6: Install the new tie rod end

  • Thread the new tie rod end onto the inner tie rod by hand.
  • Insert the stud into the steering knuckle.
  • Install the new lock nut and tighten with the 19mm socket.
  • Torque to 67 Nm (49 ft-lbs) for the tie rod end castle nut.
  • Continue tightening only enough to align the cotter pin hole if needed.

Step 7: Secure the cotter pin

  • Insert a new cotter pin with needle-nose pliers.
  • Bend the ends over so it cannot back out.
  • Torque the jam nut with the 19mm wrench to 55 Nm (41 ft-lbs).

Step 8: Reinstall the wheel and lower the vehicle

  • Reinstall the wheel and hand-tighten the lug nuts.
  • Lower the Tacoma and torque the lug nuts with a torque wrench to 113 Nm (83 ft-lbs).

✅ After Repair

  • Start the vehicle and turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock to check for smooth movement.
  • Inspect the tie rod end for any binding or loose hardware.
  • Drive slowly first, then schedule a front-end alignment as soon as possible.
  • If the steering wheel is off-center, the alignment needs correction.
