🔧 Tie Rod End - Replacement

The outer tie rod end connects the steering rack to the front wheel knuckle. Replacing it restores steering feel and reduces play, but the alignment must be checked after the repair.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-2.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Work on a flat surface and chock the rear wheels.
  • Use jack stands; never rely on a floor jack alone.
  • Keep hands clear of the steering knuckle and suspension joints.
  • Replace tie rod ends in pairs if both sides show wear.
  • An alignment is required after this repair.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Center the steering wheel before lifting the vehicle.
  • Loosen the front wheel lug nuts before raising the car.
  • Mark the current tie rod position with a paint marker to help preserve toe setting.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise and secure the front of the vehicle

  • Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the front end.
  • Support the vehicle with jack stands under the proper lift points.
  • Remove the wheel using the lug wrench.

Step 2: Loosen the tie rod lock nut

  • Use a 21mm wrench to loosen the lock nut on the tie rod sleeve.
  • Use a paint marker to mark the nut and rod position before moving anything.
  • Keep the adjustment close to original.

Step 3: Remove the cotter pin and castle nut

  • Use pliers to straighten and remove the cotter pin from the tie rod end stud.
  • Use a 19mm socket to remove the castle nut.
  • Leave the nut threaded on a few turns if the stud is still tight.

Step 4: Separate the tie rod end from the knuckle

  • Use a tie rod end puller or separator tool (specialty) to break the taper joint loose.
  • If needed, use a pickle fork (specialty) or ball joint separator tool (specialty).
  • Remove the castle nut after the stud pops free.

Step 5: Remove the old tie rod end

  • Count the number of turns needed to remove the old tie rod end.
  • Use a 21mm wrench to hold the inner rod if needed while unscrewing the end.
  • Remove the old tie rod end from the threaded rod.

Step 6: Install the new tie rod end

  • Thread the new tie rod end on the same number of turns counted during removal.
  • Use a 21mm wrench to fine-tune the length if needed.
  • Insert the stud into the steering knuckle.
  • Install the new castle nut and tighten it with a 19mm socket.
  • Torque to 49 Nm (36 ft-lbs).

Step 7: Install the cotter pin and tighten the lock nut

  • Use pliers to install the new cotter pin through the stud and castle nut.
  • Tighten the lock nut against the tie rod end sleeve using a 21mm wrench.
  • Torque to 69 Nm (51 ft-lbs).
  • Never reuse an old cotter pin.

Step 8: Reinstall the wheel and lower the vehicle

  • Reinstall the wheel and hand-tighten the lug nuts.
  • Lower the vehicle using the floor jack.
  • Tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern with the torque wrench.
  • Torque to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs).

✅ After Repair

  • Check that the steering wheel turns smoothly lock to lock.
  • Inspect the tie rod end and lock nut to confirm everything is secure.
  • Get a front-end alignment as soon as possible.
  • Test drive slowly at first and confirm the car tracks straight.
