🔧 Tie Rod End - Replacement

Your F-150’s outer tie rod end connects the steering linkage to the front wheel. If it is loose, torn, or noisy, it can cause wandering steering, uneven tire wear, and clunks over bumps. Replacing it restores steering precision and helps keep the front end aligned.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1-2 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Work on a level surface and chock the rear wheels.
  • Use jack stands; never rely on a floor jack alone.
  • Do not let the steering wheel turn with the tie rod disconnected.
  • Have the front end aligned after the repair.
  • No battery disconnect is required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves
  • 21mm socket
  • 18mm wrench
  • Tie rod end puller (specialty)
  • Pliers
  • Torque wrench
  • Tape measure
  • Paint marker
  • Hammer

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Outer tie rod end - Qty: 1
  • New cotter pin - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Loosen the front lug nuts slightly if you need more access, then raise the front corner.
  • Measure the exposed threads or count turns on the old part so the new one starts close to the same position.
  • Marking the old position helps keep alignment close.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise and secure the vehicle

  • Use the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the front corner on the side you are repairing.
  • Support it with a jack stand (rated 3-ton minimum).
  • Remove the front wheel if needed for access.

Step 2: Mark the tie rod position

  • Use a paint marker to mark the jam nut position and the tie rod end position.
  • Count the number of turns it takes to remove the old tie rod end if possible.

Step 3: Remove the cotter pin and castle nut

  • Use pliers to straighten and remove the cotter pin from the tie rod stud.
  • Use the 21mm socket to remove the castle nut from the tie rod end stud.
  • Keep the nut for comparison only.

Step 4: Separate the tie rod end from the steering knuckle

  • Use a tie rod end puller (specialty) to press the stud out of the knuckle.
  • If needed, tap the knuckle lightly with a hammer to help release it.
  • Do not hit the threaded stud directly.

Step 5: Remove the old tie rod end

  • Use the 18mm wrench to loosen the jam nut on the inner tie rod.
  • Unscrew the outer tie rod end by hand and count the turns as you remove it.

Step 6: Install the new tie rod end

  • Thread the new outer tie rod end onto the inner tie rod the same number of turns as removal.
  • Start the new part by hand to avoid cross-threading.
  • Install the stud into the steering knuckle.

Step 7: Tighten the fasteners

  • Use the 18mm wrench to tighten the jam nut.
  • Use the torque wrench to tighten the castle nut to 60 Nm (44 ft-lbs).
  • If the cotter pin hole does not line up, tighten slightly more until it does; do not loosen to align.
  • Install a new cotter pin with pliers and bend the ends over.

Step 8: Reinstall the wheel and lower the truck

  • Reinstall the wheel if removed.
  • Lower the vehicle with the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) and remove the jack stand.
  • Tighten wheel lug nuts to the factory specification for your wheel setup.

✅ After Repair

  • Road test at low speed first.
  • Check for steering pull, clunks, or looseness.
  • Get a front-end alignment as soon as possible.
  • Inspect the tire wear pattern over the next few drives.
