🔧 Tie Rod End - Replacement

This procedure replaces the outer tie rod end on your Silverado. The tie rod end connects the steering rack to the wheel knuckle, so replacing it restores steering tightness and helps prevent uneven tire wear.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1-2 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Work on a flat surface with the parking brake fully set.
  • Chock the rear wheels before lifting the front end.
  • Use jack stands; never rely on the floor jack alone.
  • Keep hands clear of the steering knuckle while separating the tie rod end.
  • An alignment is required after this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves
  • 19mm lug wrench
  • 18mm socket
  • 18mm wrench
  • 21mm wrench
  • Torque wrench
  • Ball joint separator (specialty)
  • Pliers
  • Paint marker
  • Measuring tape

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Outer tie rod end - Qty: 1
  • Outer tie rod end lock nut - Qty: 1
  • Cotter pin - Qty: 1
  • Grease - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and center the steering wheel.
  • Measure the exposed threads or the distance from the jam nut to the tie rod end before removal. This helps keep the alignment close enough to drive to the shop.
  • Loosen the front lug nuts slightly before lifting the truck.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift and secure the front wheel

  • Use the floor jack to lift the front corner on the side you are repairing.
  • Place a jack stand under the frame and lower the truck onto it.
  • Remove the wheel with the 19mm lug wrench.

Step 2: Remove the cotter pin and nut

  • Use pliers to straighten and pull out the cotter pin from the tie rod stud.
  • Remove the castellated nut with the 18mm socket and ratchet.
  • Keep the nut nearby for reference.

Step 3: Separate the tie rod end

  • Use the ball joint separator (specialty) to pop the tie rod stud out of the steering knuckle.
  • If needed, lightly tap the side of the knuckle with a hammer while keeping the separator in place.
  • Do not hammer on the stud itself.

Step 4: Mark and remove the old tie rod end

  • Use a paint marker to mark the position of the jam nut and tie rod end.
  • Hold the inner tie rod with a 21mm wrench.
  • Loosen the jam nut with the 18mm wrench.
  • Unscrew the tie rod end by hand and count the turns as you remove it.

Step 5: Install the new tie rod end

  • Thread the new tie rod end onto the inner tie rod the same number of turns you counted during removal.
  • Keep the jam nut loose for now.
  • Align the stud into the steering knuckle and install the new nut by hand.

Step 6: Tighten the fasteners

  • Use the 18mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the tie rod end nut to 62 Nm (46 ft-lbs).
  • Use the 18mm wrench to tighten the jam nut to 85 Nm (63 ft-lbs).
  • Install a new cotter pin with pliers if the nut has a slot aligned for it.
  • Never loosen to align the cotter pin hole.

Step 7: Reinstall the wheel

  • Put the wheel back on and start the lug nuts by hand.
  • Lower the truck to the ground.
  • Torque the lug nuts with the torque wrench to 176 Nm (130 ft-lbs) in a crisscross pattern.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the truck and turn the steering wheel lock to lock while parked to check for any odd noises.
  • Drive slowly at first and confirm the steering wheel is centered.
  • Schedule a professional wheel alignment as soon as possible.
  • Inspect the new tie rod end after a short test drive to make sure the jam nut stays tight.
