🔧 Mass Air Flow Sensor - Replacement
The MAF sensor on your Equinox measures incoming air so the engine computer can set fuel delivery correctly. If it is dirty or failing, you may get rough idle, poor power, stalling, or a check engine light.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Turn the engine off and let it cool before touching the air intake parts.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable before unplugging the sensor.
- Do not spray cleaners or use force on the hot wire element inside the MAF sensor.
- Keep dirt out of the air intake tube and throttle body.
- If your check engine light is on, a scan tool may be needed to clear codes after repair.

Step 1: Remove the engine cover if equipped
- Use your hands to lift the engine cover straight up and off.
- Set it aside in a safe place.
- Pull straight up, not sideways.
Step 2: Loosen the air intake duct
- Use an 8mm socket or flat blade screwdriver to loosen the intake tube clamps.
- Release any clips or retainers holding the duct to the air box.

- Tighten these clamp fasteners later to 4 N·m (35 in-lbs).
Step 3: Unplug the MAF sensor
- Press the connector lock tab and pull the electrical connector straight off.
- If the lock is stubborn, use a small flat blade screwdriver gently on the tab.
- Never pull on the wires.
Step 4: Remove the MAF sensor
- Use a Torx T20 screwdriver to remove the sensor screws.
- Lift the sensor straight out of the air duct or air box.
- Inspect the sealing gasket or O-ring for damage.
- Tighten the new sensor screws to 3 N·m (27 in-lbs).
Step 5: Install the new MAF sensor
- Place the new sensor in the same direction as the old one.
- Start both screws by hand first, then tighten with the Torx T20 screwdriver.
- Make sure the seal sits flat and clean.
- Do not overtighten the plastic housing.
Step 6: Reconnect the intake duct and electrical connector
- Reinstall the air intake duct and align it fully.
- Use the 8mm socket or flat blade screwdriver to tighten the clamps to 4 N·m (35 in-lbs).
- Reconnect the MAF electrical connector until it clicks.
- Reinstall any clips or retainers removed earlier.
Step 7: Reconnect the battery and finish up
- Reconnect the negative battery cable with an 8mm socket.
- Reinstall the engine cover if removed.
- Make sure all tools are clear from the engine bay.
✅ After Repair
- Start the engine and let it idle for 1-2 minutes.
- Check for a rough idle, warning lights, or intake air leaks.
- Take a short test drive and verify throttle response feels normal.
- If the check engine light stays on, clear codes with a scan tool and recheck for pending faults.
