🔧 Mass Air Flow Sensor - Replacement
The MAF sensor measures incoming air so the engine computer can set fuel mixture correctly. On your Camry, this is a quick air-intake repair: disconnect the connector, remove the sensor from the air cleaner tube, and install the new one without damaging the sensing element.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Let the engine cool before working near the air intake box.
- Do not touch the MAF sensing wire or film inside the sensor.
- Use only MAF sensor cleaner if the intake tube is dirty; do not use brake cleaner.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable if the connector is stubborn or damaged.
- Keep dirt out of the open intake tube while the sensor is removed.

- Phillips screwdriver
- 10mm socket
- 1/4-inch ratchet

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the air intake area
- Open the hood and locate the air cleaner box on the driver side.
- If needed, use a 10mm socket and 1/4-inch ratchet to loosen the air cleaner housing cover fasteners.
- Release any intake duct clips with a trim clip tool.
Step 2: Disconnect the MAF sensor connector
- Press the connector lock tab and unplug the electrical connector from the sensor.
- If the lock is tight, use your fingers only and do not pry on the wires.
- Pull on the connector body, not the wires.
Step 3: Remove the old sensor
- Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the MAF sensor screws.
- Lift the sensor straight out of the air tube or housing.
- Check the seal and the mounting area for dirt or damage.
Step 4: Install the new sensor
- Place the new mass air flow sensor in the same orientation as the old one.
- Install the screws by hand first, then tighten with the Phillips screwdriver.
- Torque to 2.5 Nm (22 in-lbs).
Step 5: Reconnect and reassemble
- Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks.
- Reinstall the air cleaner cover or duct and tighten any fasteners with the 10mm socket if removed.
- Make sure all clamps and clips are fully seated.
Step 6: Start and verify
- Start the engine and let it idle.
- Check for a smooth idle and confirm the check engine light is off.
- If the light stays on, a scan tool may be needed to clear codes and verify data.
✅ After Repair
- Test drive the Camry for 10-15 minutes.
- Watch for hesitation, rough idle, or a return of the check engine light.
- If the vehicle had a stored MAF code, clear it with a scan tool if needed.
