🔧 CX-30 - Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor Replacement
The MAF sensor measures the air entering your engine so the computer can add the correct amount of fuel. If it’s failing or contaminated, your CX-30 can run rough, hesitate, or set a check-engine light. This job is quick because the sensor sits on the air intake tube near the air box.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Work on a cool engine to avoid burns.
- ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent accidental shorts and to reduce the chance of setting new fault codes.
- ⚠️ Do not touch the MAF sensing element (tiny wire/film inside). It’s fragile.
- ⚠️ Keep dirt out of the intake tube; anything that falls in can be pulled into the engine.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" ratchet
- 3" extension (1/4" drive)
- Torx T20 driver
- Phillips #2 screwdriver
- Trim clip tool
- Torque wrench (inch-pound)
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Mass air flow (MAF) sensor - Qty: 1
- MAF sensor O-ring / seal (if not included with sensor) - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- 🔋 Open the hood and disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket. Position the cable so it can’t spring back onto the terminal.
- 🧼 Wipe dust off the air intake tube area so dirt doesn’t fall inside when the sensor comes out.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Locate the MAF sensor
- Find the air box and the intake tube leading toward the engine.
- The MAF sensor is the small module with an electrical connector installed in the intake tube/air box outlet.
Step 2: Unplug the MAF electrical connector
- Press the connector lock tab and pull the connector straight off.
- If it’s stubborn, use a trim clip tool gently to lift the lock tab. Don’t pry on the wires.
Step 3: Remove the MAF sensor retaining screws
- Remove the two retaining screws using a Torx T20 driver (common) or a Phillips #2 screwdriver (some builds use Phillips).
- Set the screws aside where they won’t fall into the engine bay.
Step 4: Remove the MAF sensor from the intake tube
- Pull the sensor straight out by wiggling gently.
- Remove the old O-ring/seal if it stayed in the housing.
- Inspect the opening for dirt; wipe the rim only (do not push debris inside).
Step 5: Install the new MAF sensor
- Lightly seat the new O-ring/seal (if separate) onto the sensor or into the housing, matching how the original was installed.
- Insert the sensor straight in until fully seated and flush.
- Install and tighten the retaining screws using the Torx T20 driver or Phillips #2 screwdriver.
- Torque to 2.0 Nm (18 in-lbs) using an inch-pound torque wrench.
Step 6: Reconnect the electrical connector
- Push the connector on until it clicks/locks.
- Gently tug to confirm it’s fully seated.
Step 7: Reconnect the battery
- Reconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
- Tighten the terminal clamp securely. Snug, not crushing tight.
✅ After Repair
- 🧪 Start your CX-30 and let it idle for 2-3 minutes. Confirm the idle is smooth.
- 🔎 Check that the check-engine light stays off (or doesn’t come back after a short drive).
- 🚗 Test-drive 10-15 minutes with gentle acceleration. Confirm no hesitation or surging.
- 🧰 If the light is on, scan for codes; a loose connector or unseated O-ring can cause incorrect readings.
💰 DIY vs Shop Cost
Shop Cost: $200-$450 (parts + labor)
DIY Cost: $90-$250 (parts only)
