🔧 Kicks - Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor Replacement
Your Kicks uses a MAF sensor to measure how much air is entering the engine so the computer can set fuel delivery. If it’s failing, you can get rough idle, hesitation, poor MPG, or a check engine light. Replacement is usually simple because it sits in the air intake tube right after the air box.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Let the engine cool before working near the intake area.
- ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical damage and reduce the chance of setting new faults.
- ⚠️ Do not touch the sensor element (the delicate “wire/film” inside). Oils or damage can ruin the new sensor.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" ratchet
- 3" extension (1/4")
- Torx T20 bit
- Torx T20 security bit
- Flat-blade screwdriver (small)
- Trim clip tool
- Torque wrench (inch-pound)
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Mass air flow (MAF) sensor - Qty: 1
- MAF sensor O-ring/seal - Qty: 1
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park your Kicks on level ground and turn the ignition OFF.
- Open the hood and locate the air box and intake tube (the MAF is usually mounted on the tube right after the air box).
- Disconnect the battery: use a 10mm socket to remove the negative terminal and set it aside so it can’t spring back.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Locate the MAF sensor
- Find the air filter box and the intake tube going toward the engine.
- The MAF sensor is the small unit with an electrical connector and usually 2 screws holding it to the intake tube/air duct.
Step 2: Unplug the electrical connector
- Press the connector lock tab and pull the connector straight off.
- If it’s stuck, use a flat-blade screwdriver (small) gently on the lock tab only. Don’t pry on the wires.
Step 3: Remove the MAF mounting screws
- Remove the 2 screws using a Torx T20 bit or Torx T20 security bit.
- Security Torx has a hole in the tip. Use the one that fits your screws.
- Set the screws somewhere safe so they don’t fall into the engine bay.
Step 4: Remove the MAF sensor from the intake tube
- Pull the sensor straight out by hand. If it’s tight, wiggle it gently—do not twist hard.
- Remove the old O-ring/seal if it stayed in the intake tube.
- Do not touch the sensing element inside the sensor opening.
Step 5: Install the new MAF sensor
- Lightly seat the new O-ring/seal on the sensor (or into the tube—match how the old one sat).
- Insert the new sensor straight into place until it fully seats.
- Start both screws by hand first (prevents cross-threading).
- Tighten the screws with a Torx T20 bit, then use a torque wrench (inch-pound) to finish: Torque to 3.5 Nm (31 in-lbs).
Step 6: Reconnect the connector and battery
- Push the electrical connector on until it clicks.
- Reconnect the negative battery terminal using a 10mm socket.
âś… After Repair
- Start your Kicks and let it idle for 2–3 minutes. Listen for air leaks (hissing) around the intake tube/MAF area.
- If you had a check engine light before: clear codes with an OBD2 scan tool if available, then test drive 10–15 minutes.
- Recheck that the connector is fully seated and the screws are snug after the test drive.
