🔧 Passport - Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor Replacement

The MAF sensor measures how much air enters your engine so the computer can add the right amount of fuel. When it fails, your Passport can run rough, hesitate, or turn on the check engine light. Replacement is usually quick because it sits on the air intake tube near the air box.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🛑 Let the engine cool before working near the intake area.
  • 🧯 Turn ignition OFF and keep the key fob away from the vehicle while unplugging sensors.
  • 🔋 If you disconnect the battery, you may need an idle relearn afterward.
  • 🧼 Do not touch the sensing element inside the MAF opening (it’s delicate).

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 1/4" drive extension (3")
  • 10mm socket
  • 8mm socket
  • Phillips #2 screwdriver
  • Torx T20 screwdriver
  • Trim clip tool
  • Inch-pound torque wrench (specialty)

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Mass air flow (MAF) sensor - Qty: 1
  • MAF sensor O-ring / seal (if not included with sensor) - Qty: 1
  • Dielectric grease (optional) - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • 🔑 Verify ignition is OFF and the key fob is not inside the vehicle.
  • 🔋 Optional: Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent accidental fault codes.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the intake tube and MAF sensor

  • Open the hood and locate the air box and the large rubber intake tube leading toward the engine.
  • Look for a small sensor housing on the intake tube with an electrical connector (this is the MAF sensor).
  • If an engine cover blocks access, remove it using a 10mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet, or lift it off if it’s a push-on style.

Step 2: Disconnect the MAF electrical connector

  • Press the connector lock tab and pull the connector straight off.
  • If it’s stuck, use a trim clip tool gently—do not pry hard on the sensor body.
  • Pull on the connector, not the wires.

Step 3: Remove the MAF sensor from the intake tube

  • Remove the two MAF retaining screws using a Phillips #2 screwdriver (or Torx T20 screwdriver if your screws are Torx).
  • Carefully lift the sensor straight out of the intake tube.
  • Remove the old MAF sensor O-ring / seal if it stayed behind in the tube.

Step 4: Install the new MAF sensor

  • Lightly seat the new O-ring/seal on the new sensor (or in the intake tube groove, depending on design).
  • Insert the new sensor straight into the opening without forcing it.
  • Install the retaining screws and tighten using a Phillips #2 screwdriver or Torx T20 screwdriver.
  • Finish tightening with an inch-pound torque wrench (specialty): Torque to 3.5 Nm (31 in-lbs).

Step 5: Reconnect everything

  • Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks into place.
  • If you disconnected the battery, reconnect the negative terminal using a 10mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet.

✅ After Repair

  • 🧪 Start the engine and let it idle. Confirm it runs smoothly and the connector is fully seated.
  • 🔎 If the check engine light was on, clear codes with a scan tool (if available) and verify none return.
  • 🧠 If you disconnected the battery: warm the engine fully, turn all accessories OFF (A/C, lights), then let it idle for about 5 minutes to help the computer relearn idle.
