šŸ”§ 3500 - Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor Replacement

The MAF sensor measures how much air is entering your 3500’s engine so the computer can add the right amount of fuel. If it fails or gets contaminated, you can get rough idle, poor throttle response, and a check-engine light.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Work on a cool engine to avoid burns from hot intake parts.
  • āš ļø Keep dirt out of the intake tube—anything that falls in can damage the engine.
  • āš ļø If you disconnect the battery, you may lose radio presets.
  • āš ļø Do not touch the sensing element inside the MAF—it's very delicate.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 8mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 6" 1/4" drive extension
  • Torx T20 bit
  • Torx T25 bit
  • Small flathead screwdriver
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Clean shop towels
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Mass air flow (MAF) sensor - Qty: 1
  • MAF sensor seal/O-ring (if not included with sensor) - Qty: 1
  • Dielectric grease (optional) - Qty: 1

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and locate the air intake tube between the air box and the throttle body.
  • If you want the safest approach, disconnect the negative battery cable using an 8mm socket. Negative terminal is the ā€œ-ā€ post.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the MAF sensor

  • Find the plastic air intake tube coming out of the air box.
  • The MAF sensor is typically mounted in that tube and has an electrical connector plugged into it.

Step 2: Unplug the MAF electrical connector

  • Use a small flathead screwdriver to gently lift the red lock (if equipped), then press the release tab and pull the connector straight off.
  • Pull on the connector body, not the wires.
  • If the connector is stubborn, use needle-nose pliers carefully to help move the lock—do not crush it.

Step 3: Remove the MAF sensor screws

  • Use a Torx T20 bit to remove the two MAF mounting screws.
  • If the T20 doesn’t fit snugly, switch to a Torx T25 bit (some housings use T25).
  • Set the screws aside on a clean shop towel so they don’t get lost.

Step 4: Remove the MAF sensor from the intake tube

  • Gently pull the sensor straight out of the intake tube.
  • If it feels stuck, wiggle it slightly while pulling—don’t pry on the plastic tube.
  • Inspect the seal/O-ring. If it’s torn, flattened, or missing, replace it.

Step 5: Install the new MAF sensor

  • Make sure the new sensor is oriented the same way as the old one (same direction and alignment).
  • Carefully slide it into the opening until fully seated and flush.
  • Install the screws by hand first to prevent cross-threading, then tighten using a Torx T20 bit or Torx T25 bit (whichever fits correctly).
  • Torque to 4 NĀ·m (35 in-lbs)

Step 6: Reconnect the MAF electrical connector

  • Push the connector on until it clicks.
  • If it has a red lock, slide it back into the locked position using a small flathead screwdriver.
  • If you’re using it, apply a tiny amount of dielectric grease to the connector seal only (not on the pins).

Step 7: Reconnect the battery (if disconnected)

  • Reconnect the negative battery cable using an 8mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet.
  • Make it snug—do not overtighten the battery terminal.

āœ… After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 2-3 minutes.
  • Check that the idle is smooth and the check-engine light stays off.
  • If you had a check-engine light before, clear codes with a scan tool, then road-test. If the light returns, the issue may be wiring, an intake air leak, or another sensor.
  • Do a quick visual check that the intake tube is seated and clamps are secure.

šŸ’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $180-$420 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $90-$280 (parts only)
