š§ Cherokee - Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor Replacement
The MAF sensor measures how much air is entering your engine so the computer can deliver the right amount of fuel. If itās failing or contaminated, you may get rough idle, hesitation, poor MPG, or a check engine light.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.8 hours
ā ļø Safety & Precautions
- ā ļø Let the engine cool so you donāt burn your hands on hot parts.
- ā ļø Turn ignition OFF and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
- ā ļø Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent a warning light or electrical short.
- ā ļø Donāt touch the sensor element inside the housing; itās delicate.
š§ Required Tools

- 10mm socket
- 1/4" ratchet
- 6" extension
- Flathead screwdriver
- Trim clip remover
- Torque wrench (inch-pound)
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
š© Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Mass air flow (MAF) sensor - Qty: 1
- Air intake tube clamp (optional) - Qty: 1
š Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and shift to Park.
- Open the hood and support it securely.
- Disconnect the negative battery terminal using a 10mm socket.
- MAF is usually between air box and throttle body.
šØ Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Locate the MAF sensor
- Look at the air intake tube that runs from the air filter box toward the engine.
- The MAF sensor is typically mounted in the intake tube near the air box and has an electrical connector.
Step 2: Remove any covers blocking access
- If you have an engine cover, pull it upward firmly by hand to release it, or remove fasteners using a trim clip remover or 10mm socket (varies by cover).
Step 3: Unplug the MAF electrical connector
- Press the connector lock tab and pull the connector straight off.
- If itās stuck, gently assist with a flathead screwdriver on the tab only.
- Never pull on the wires.
Step 4: Loosen the intake tube clamp (if needed for access)
- Use a flathead screwdriver to loosen the worm-gear clamp near the MAF housing if it blocks removal.
- Wiggle the tube slightly to create room; donāt crack the plastic.
Step 5: Remove the MAF sensor from the intake
- Remove the MAF mounting screws/bolts using a 10mm socket with a 1/4" ratchet and 6" extension as needed.
- Pull the MAF sensor straight out. If thereās an O-ring seal, keep it with the sensor.
- Donāt drop itāsensor elements can crack.
Step 6: Install the new MAF sensor
- Compare the new sensor to the old one (same connector and shape).
- Install it straight into the housing without forcing it.
- Reinstall the screws/bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Tighten the fasteners evenly with a 10mm socket.
- Torque to 3-5 Nm (27-44 in-lbs)
Step 7: Reconnect the intake tube and clamp
- Seat the intake tube fully back into place.
- Tighten the clamp using a flathead screwdriver until snug.
- Snug is enoughāover-tightening can crack plastic.
Step 8: Plug the connector back in
- Push the connector onto the MAF sensor until it clicks.
Step 9: Reconnect the battery
- Reconnect the negative battery terminal using a 10mm socket.
- Torque to 6 Nm (53 in-lbs)
ā After Repair
- Start the engine and let it idle for 2-3 minutes.
- Check that idle is smooth and that there are no air leaks (no whistling/hissing).
- If the check engine light was on, it may take a few trips to clear; a scan tool can clear codes immediately.
- Test drive 10-15 minutes and recheck for warning lights.
