🔧 Highlander - Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor Replacement
The MAF sensor measures how much air is entering your Highlander’s engine so the computer can add the right amount of fuel. Replacing it is usually a quick job because it’s mounted in the intake duct right after the air filter box.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.8 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Let the engine cool so you don’t burn your hands on hot parts.
- ⚠️ Turn the ignition fully OFF and keep the key/fob away from the vehicle while unplugging sensors.
- ⚠️ Do not touch the sensing wires/film inside the MAF opening; it’s fragile.
- ⚠️ If you disconnect the battery, you may lose radio presets and window auto-up/down memory.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" ratchet
- 6" extension (1/4")
- Torque wrench (inch‑pound)
- Torx T20 bit
- Phillips #2 screwdriver
- Trim clip tool
- Needle-nose pliers
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Mass air flow (MAF) sensor - Qty: 1
- MAF sensor O-ring / seal - Qty: 1
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Open the hood and locate the intake tube/air box on top of the engine bay.
- If you choose to disconnect the battery: use a 10mm socket to remove the negative terminal and isolate it so it can’t spring back.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Locate the MAF sensor
- Find the air filter box and the large intake tube that goes toward the engine.
- The MAF sensor is the small electrical sensor mounted in that tube/air box outlet, with a plug and 2 small screws.
Step 2: Unplug the electrical connector
- Press the locking tab and pull the connector straight off by hand.
- If it’s stubborn, use a trim clip tool to gently help the tab—don’t yank the wires.
Step 3: Remove the MAF sensor screws
- Look closely at the screw head type:
- If it’s a star-shaped head, use a Torx T20 bit (Torx is a star-shaped fastener type).
- If it’s a cross head, use a Phillips #2 screwdriver.
- Remove the 2 screws and set them aside where they won’t fall into the engine bay.
Step 4: Remove the old MAF sensor
- Pull the sensor straight out of the housing by hand.
- If it feels stuck, gently wiggle it while pulling—do not pry on the plastic housing.
- Do not touch the sensing element.
Step 5: Install the new MAF sensor and seal
- Compare the old and new sensors to confirm the connector and mounting match.
- Install the new MAF sensor O-ring / seal if it’s separate (lightly seat it evenly; no oil needed).
- Slide the new sensor straight into the bore until it fully seats.
Step 6: Reinstall and torque the MAF screws
- Start both screws by hand to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a torque wrench (inch‑pound) with the correct bit to tighten evenly: Torque to 18 in‑lb (2.0 N·m).
Step 7: Reconnect the connector and recheck your work
- Push the connector on until it clicks.
- Make sure no tools are left in the engine bay and the intake tube/air box is properly seated.
- If you disconnected the battery, reconnect it with a 10mm socket and snug the clamp.
âś… After Repair
- Start the engine and let it idle for 2–3 minutes. The idle should be steady.
- If you had a check-engine light, use an OBD2 scan tool to clear codes and confirm none return after a short drive.
- Take a 10–15 minute test drive with gentle acceleration and verify no warning lights come back.
- If windows lost auto function after battery disconnect, reinitialize by holding the window switch up for a few seconds after it fully closes.
