Step-by-step MAF sensor removal and install with tools list, parts, torque specs, and safety tips for 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024
🔧 XT5 - Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor Replacement
The MAF sensor measures how much air is entering your engine so the computer can deliver the right fuel. A bad or contaminated MAF can cause rough idle, hesitation, poor fuel economy, or a check-engine light.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Work with the engine off and cool to avoid burns.
- ⚠️ Keep fingers/tools away from the radiator fans; they can turn on unexpectedly.
- ⚠️ Do not touch the MAF sensing element (the delicate wire/film inside); it damages easily.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required, but keep the key fob away from the vehicle and the ignition OFF.

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Mass air flow (MAF) sensor - Qty: 1
- MAF sensor O-ring/seal (if not included with sensor) - Qty: 1
- Electrical contact cleaner (sensor-safe) - Qty: 1
- Dielectric grease (optional) - Qty: 1
- Engine air filter (optional, if dirty) - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Open the hood and remove any large plastic engine cover if it blocks access (some XT5 setups don’t require this).
- Find the MAF sensor: it’s mounted in the air intake tube near the air filter box, with a 4–6 wire electrical connector.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Expose the intake tube and MAF sensor
- Use a flashlight to locate the MAF sensor on the intake tube near the air box.
- If a plastic cover or snorkel is in the way, remove its push-pins with a trim clip removal tool.
Step 2: Unplug the MAF electrical connector
- Press the connector lock tab by hand; if it’s tight, gently help it with a small flat-blade screwdriver.
- Pull the connector straight off (don’t pull on the wires).
- Wiggle, don’t yank.
Step 3: Remove the MAF sensor retaining screws
- Remove the two MAF mounting screws using a Torx T20 bit.
- If your screws are slightly larger, use a Torx T25 bit instead.
- Set the screws somewhere safe so they don’t drop into the engine bay.
Step 4: Remove the MAF sensor from the intake tube
- Gently twist and pull the sensor straight out by hand.
- Inspect the sensor seal/O-ring; remove it if it stayed in the intake tube.
- Do not touch the sensing element inside the sensor opening.
Step 5: (Recommended) Clean the connector and inspect the intake tube
- Spray the connector terminals lightly with electrical contact cleaner (sensor-safe) and let it air-dry.
- Check the intake tube for cracks or loose clamps; air leaks can mimic a “bad MAF.”
- If you loosen any intake clamps, snug them back with a 7mm socket or 8mm socket (size varies by clamp).
Step 6: Install the new MAF sensor
- Install a new seal/O-ring (if separate) onto the new sensor by hand.
- Slide the new sensor into the intake tube in the same orientation as the old one (match the bolt holes).
- Install and tighten the screws using a Torx T20 bit (or Torx T25 bit if that’s what your XT5 uses).
- Finish tightening with a torque wrench (inch-pound): Torque to 18 in-lb (2 N·m).
Step 7: Reconnect and reassemble
- Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks.
- If you removed covers/snorkels, reinstall them using the trim clip removal tool.
- If you loosened intake clamps, re-check them with a 7mm socket or 8mm socket.
✅ After Repair
- Start the engine and let it idle for 2–3 minutes; idle should stabilize.
- Check for a check-engine light and listen for intake air leaks (hissing).
- If you had a check-engine light before, clear the code with a scan tool after confirming everything is connected.
- Test drive 10–15 minutes with gentle acceleration and verify no new warnings.
