How to Replace the Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor on a 2016 INFINITI Q50

🔧 Q50 - Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor Replacement
The MAF sensor measures how much air enters your engine so the computer can add the right amount of fuel. When it fails or gets contaminated, you can get rough idle, poor power, or a check engine light—replacing it restores accurate airflow readings.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Let the engine cool before working near the turbo/intake piping.
- ⚠️ Keep dirt out of the intake tube—do not leave it open longer than needed.
- ⚠️ Avoid touching the MAF sensing element; it’s delicate and can be damaged easily.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is recommended to prevent accidental shorting at the connector.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" drive ratchet
- 3" extension (1/4")
- Torx T20 bit
- Flat trim tool
- Small pick tool
- Torque wrench (inch-pound)
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Mass air flow (MAF) sensor - Qty: 1
- MAF sensor O-ring seal (if not included) - Qty: 1
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Open the hood and remove any loose jewelry or dangling sleeves.
- Disconnect the negative battery terminal using a 10mm socket (this is the black “-” cable).
- Tip: Take a quick photo of the connector routing.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Assumption: Your Q50’s MAF is mounted in the intake air tube/airbox outlet near the air filter housing (common on the Q50 2.0t). If yours is located slightly differently, the removal/install steps are the same.
Step 1: Locate the MAF sensor
- Look at the air intake tube connected to the air filter box; the MAF is a small sensor with an electrical connector plugged into it.
- If a cover blocks access, gently release push-clips using a flat trim tool (a plastic pry tool that won’t scratch).
Step 2: Unplug the MAF electrical connector
- Press the connector lock tab and pull the connector straight off.
- If the lock is stubborn, use a small pick tool to lift the tab slightly (don’t pry hard).
- Tip: Pull on the connector, not the wires.
Step 3: Remove the MAF sensor from the intake tube
- Remove the MAF mounting screws using a Torx T20 bit with a 1/4" ratchet and 3" extension.
- Carefully twist and pull the sensor straight out.
- Remove the old O-ring seal if it stayed in the tube.
Step 4: Install the new MAF sensor
- Lightly seat the new O-ring on the sensor (or ensure it’s installed if it came pre-fitted).
- Insert the new sensor straight in—do not force it.
- Install the screws by hand first to avoid cross-threading, then tighten with the Torx T20 bit.
- Torque to 3 Nm (27 in-lbs) using a torque wrench (inch-pound).
- Tip: Snug only—overtightening can crack plastic.
Step 5: Reconnect the connector and battery
- Push the MAF connector on until it clicks.
- Reconnect the negative battery terminal using a 10mm socket.
- Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs) (battery clamp should be secure, not crushed).
âś… After Repair
- Start the engine and let it idle for 2-3 minutes; it may idle slightly uneven for a few seconds while it relearns.
- Check that the intake tube is fully seated and there are no hissing sounds (a hissing sound can mean an air leak).
- If you had a check engine light, clear codes with a scan tool if available; otherwise, it may clear after a few drive cycles if the issue is fixed.
- Test drive 10-15 minutes with gentle acceleration, then recheck for warning lights.
