šŸ”§ Edge - Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor Replacement

The MAF sensor measures how much air is entering your Edge so the engine computer can add the correct amount of fuel. A dirty or failed MAF can cause rough idle, hesitation, poor mileage, or a check-engine light.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

Assumption: Your Edge uses a bolt-in MAF on the air intake tube near the air box.

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Let the engine cool before working near the turbo/intake area.
  • āš ļø Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent damage to the sensor wiring and to help the computer relearn cleanly.
  • āš ļø Do not touch the sensing element inside the MAF (it’s fragile and ruins easily).
  • āš ļø Keep dirt out of the intake tube—anything that falls in can be pulled into the engine.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 8mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 1/4" drive extension (3")
  • Torx T20 bit
  • Small flat-blade screwdriver
  • Torque wrench (inch-pound capable)
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Shop towel

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Mass air flow (MAF) sensor - Qty: 1
  • MAF sensor O-ring seal - Qty: 1

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and remove any loose jewelry/sleeves that can snag.
  • Disconnect the battery: use an 8mm socket to remove the negative terminal and tuck it aside so it can’t spring back.
  • If you have an aftermarket oiled air filter, consider switching to a dry filter—oil can contaminate the new MAF.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the MAF sensor

  • Find the air intake tube coming off the air box (air filter housing).
  • The MAF is a small sensor with an electrical connector, usually held in by two Torx T20 screws.

Step 2: Unplug the MAF connector

  • Press the connector lock tab (use a small flat-blade screwdriver gently if needed) and pull the connector straight off.
  • Pull the plug, not the wires.

Step 3: Remove the MAF sensor

  • Use a Torx T20 bit with a 1/4" ratchet and 3" extension to remove the two screws.
  • Carefully twist and lift the sensor straight out.
  • Place a shop towel over the opening so nothing falls into the intake tube.

Step 4: Transfer/inspect the seal

  • Check the old sensor’s O-ring area. Remove any old seal material left behind.
  • Install a new MAF sensor O-ring seal on the new sensor if it is separate.
  • A pinched O-ring can cause a vacuum leak.

Step 5: Install the new MAF sensor

  • Remove the shop towel from the intake opening.
  • Slide the new sensor into place, keeping it straight so the O-ring doesn’t roll.
  • Install the screws by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Tighten with the Torx T20 bit, then finish with a torque wrench: Torque to 2.5 Nm (22 in-lbs).

Step 6: Reconnect the electrical connector

  • Push the connector on until it clicks/locks.
  • Give it a gentle tug to confirm it’s fully seated.

Step 7: Reconnect the battery

  • Reinstall the negative battery terminal using an 8mm socket.
  • Snug the clamp: Torque to 7 Nm (62 in-lbs).

āœ… After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 2-3 minutes. Idle may fluctuate briefly while the computer relearns.
  • Check for warning lights and listen for air leaks (hissing) around the intake tube.
  • Take a 10-15 minute test drive with gentle acceleration.
  • If the check-engine light was on, it may clear after a few drive cycles; if not, a scan tool may be needed to clear codes and confirm the fix.

šŸ’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $180-$380 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $70-$220 (parts only)

You Save: $110-$160 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1.0 hours.
