šŸ”§ RX350 - Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor Replacement

The MAF sensor measures how much air enters your engine so the computer can add the right amount of fuel. If it’s failing, you can get rough idle, hesitation, poor fuel economy, or a check-engine light. This job is quick because the sensor sits in the air intake tube near the air filter box.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

Assumption: Your MAF is held by 2 tamper-resistant Torx screws; some use Phillips/10mm—use the matching driver.

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Work on a cool engine to avoid burns.
  • āš ļø Turn ignition OFF and keep the key/fob away from the vehicle while unplugging sensors.
  • āš ļø Disconnect the negative battery cable if you’ll be tugging on wiring (recommended for beginners).
  • āš ļø Do not touch the sensor’s delicate element (the tiny wire/film inside). It can be damaged easily.
  • āš ļø If you use cleaner: only use MAF sensor cleaner, and let it fully dry.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 3" extension (1/4")
  • Torque wrench (inch-pound)
  • Security Torx T20 bit
  • Phillips #2 screwdriver
  • Flathead screwdriver (small)
  • Plastic trim tool
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Mass air flow (MAF) sensor - Qty: 1
  • MAF sensor O-ring / seal (if not included with sensor) - Qty: 1

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and let the engine cool.
  • If disconnecting the battery: use a 10mm socket to remove the negative (-) battery terminal and tuck it aside so it can’t spring back.
  • Have a clean place to set screws so they don’t fall into the engine bay.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the MAF sensor

  • Look at the air intake tube coming out of the air filter box. The MAF is the small sensor with an electrical plug, usually mounted with 2 screws.
  • If an engine cover is in the way, lift it off by hand; if it’s bolted, remove fasteners using a 10mm socket.

Step 2: Unplug the electrical connector

  • Press the connector lock tab and pull the plug straight back.
  • If it’s stuck, gently help the tab with a flathead screwdriver (small) or plastic trim tool (don’t pry hard).
  • Tip: Pull on the connector, not the wires.

Step 3: Remove the MAF sensor from the intake tube

  • Remove the two MAF mounting screws using a security Torx T20 bit or Phillips #2 screwdriver (whichever matches your screws).
  • Pull the sensor straight out. If it feels stuck, wiggle it gently—don’t twist hard.
  • Inspect the seal/O-ring. If it’s brittle, flattened, or torn, replace it.

Step 4: Install the new MAF sensor

  • Make sure the new sensor’s O-ring/seal is seated correctly and lightly snug in its groove.
  • Slide the sensor straight into the housing, keeping it square so you don’t pinch the seal.
  • Install the screws by hand first (prevents cross-threading), then tighten with the same driver.
  • Torque to 2.0 Nm (18 in-lbs) using a torque wrench (inch-pound).

Step 5: Reconnect everything

  • Plug the electrical connector back in until it clicks.
  • If you removed an engine cover, reinstall it (hand-snug) using a 10mm socket if needed.
  • If you disconnected the battery, reconnect the negative terminal using a 10mm socket (snug, not over-tight).

āœ… After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 3-5 minutes. The idle may be slightly rough at first while the computer relearns.
  • Check that the check-engine light is off. If it’s on, scan and clear codes using a scan tool (if available).
  • Take a short test drive and confirm there’s no hesitation and no warning lights.
  • Re-check the MAF connector is fully seated if symptoms remain.

šŸ’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $200-$450 (parts + labor)
