š§ HR-V - Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor Replacement
The MAF sensor measures how much air is entering your engine so the computer can deliver the right amount of fuel. If itās failing, your HR-V can run rough, hesitate, or set a check-engine light.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
ā ļø Safety & Precautions
- ā ļø Work on a cool engine; the intake area can be hot.
- ā ļø Turn ignition fully OFF and keep the key/fob away from the vehicle.
- ā ļø If you disconnect the battery, you may lose radio presets and the engine may idle rough briefly while it relearns.
- ā ļø Do not touch the sensing element inside the MAF sensor; itās delicate.

- Dielectric grease (small packet) - Qty: 1
š Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Open the hood and locate the air box and intake tube on the passenger side of the engine bay.
- If you choose to disconnect the battery: use a 10mm socket to remove the negative terminal and isolate it so it canāt spring back.
šØ Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Locate the MAF sensor on the intake
- Use a flashlight to find the sensor mounted in the intake tube/air box outlet, with an electrical connector plugged into it.
- Itās the sensor closest to the air filter box.
Step 2: Unplug the electrical connector
- Press the connector lock tab and pull the connector straight off by hand.
- If the tab is stubborn, use a pick tool (small) (specialty) gently to lift the lock. (A pick tool is a small hooked tool used to release clips without breaking them.)
- Add a tiny dab of dielectric grease to the connector seal during reassembly if desired.
Step 3: Remove the MAF sensor mounting screws
- Look at the two screws holding the sensor in.
- If they are Phillips-head, remove them with a Phillips #2 screwdriver.
- If they are Torx-head, remove them with a Torx T20 screwdriver.
- Set the screws somewhere safe so they donāt fall into the engine bay.
Step 4: Remove the MAF sensor from the housing
- Wiggle the sensor straight out by hand.
- If it feels stuck, gently twist while pullingādonāt pry hard with tools.
- Inspect the old sensorās O-ring/seal. If it stayed in the housing, remove it carefully with the pick tool (small) (specialty).
Step 5: Install the new MAF sensor
- Confirm the new sensor matches the old one (same connector and shape).
- Install a new MAF sensor O-ring/seal if provided.
- Push the sensor straight into place until it fully seats.
- Reinstall the screws with the same tool you removed them with (Phillips #2 screwdriver or Torx T20 screwdriver).
- Tighten snugly by hand. Small screws strip easily.
Step 6: Reconnect the connector and recheck your work
- Push the connector on until it clicks/locks.
- Give the connector a gentle tug to confirm itās latched.
- If you disconnected the battery, reinstall the negative terminal using a 10mm socket and tighten securely.
ā After Repair
- Start your HR-V and let it idle for 2-3 minutes. A slightly uneven idle at first can be normal while it relearns.
- If the check-engine light was on, it may not turn off immediately without clearing codes.
- Test drive for 10-15 minutes with gentle acceleration and confirm no warning lights return.
- If the light returns, the next step is to scan for codes (MAF, vacuum leak, intake duct clamp loose, or connector not fully seated).
