šŸ”§ Yukon - Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor Replacement

The MAF sensor measures how much air enters your engine so the computer can add the right amount of fuel. If it fails or gets contaminated, your Yukon can run rough, hesitate, or set a check-engine light.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

Assumption: Your Yukon uses a 2-screw, bolt-on MAF on the intake duct near the air filter box (most 6.2L setups do).

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Work on a cool engine to avoid burns from hot parts.
  • āš ļø Turn ignition OFF and keep the key/fob away from the vehicle while unplugging sensors.
  • āš ļø If you disconnect the battery, you may lose radio presets; always remove the negative cable first.
  • āš ļø Never touch the sensing elements inside the MAF; they are very delicate.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 1/4" drive extension (3")
  • 7mm socket
  • Torx T20 bit
  • Small flathead screwdriver
  • Inch-pound torque wrench (specialty)
  • Shop towel

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Mass air flow (MAF) sensor - Qty: 1
  • MAF sensor O-ring seal - Qty: 1
  • Electrical contact cleaner (sensor-safe) - Qty: 1

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • 🧰 Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • 🧰 Open the hood and let the engine cool down.
  • 🧰 Optional (recommended): Disconnect the battery negative cable using a 10mm socket if your battery terminal uses 10mm hardware (some do). If your terminal is different, skip disconnecting the battery and keep the ignition OFF.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the MAF sensor

  • Find the air intake tube between the air filter box and the throttle body.
  • The MAF sensor is typically mounted in that tube, with an electrical connector and two small screws.

Step 2: Unplug the MAF electrical connector

  • Use a small flathead screwdriver to gently lift the connector lock (if equipped), then press the release tab and pull the connector straight off.
  • Pull on the connector, not the wires.

Step 3: Loosen the intake tube if needed

  • If you don’t have enough room to remove the sensor, loosen the intake tube clamp(s) using a 7mm socket.
  • Carefully wiggle the tube for access. You usually do not need to fully remove it.

Step 4: Remove the MAF sensor

  • Remove the two MAF screws using a Torx T20 bit (Torx is a star-shaped bit).
  • Lift the sensor straight out. If it feels stuck, gently twist it while pulling—do not pry hard.
  • Remove the old O-ring seal if it stayed in the housing.

Step 5: Install the new MAF sensor

  • Lightly seat the new O-ring seal onto the new sensor (or into the housing—match how the old one was installed).
  • Slide the new sensor into place, making sure it sits flat and fully seated.
  • Start both screws by hand to avoid cross-threading.
  • Tighten the screws using a Torx T20 bit, then finish with an inch-pound torque wrench (this reads smaller torque values accurately).
  • Torque to 18 in-lb (2 Nm)

Step 6: Re-tighten the intake tube clamp(s)

  • Position the intake tube correctly (fully seated on its lips), then tighten the clamp(s) using a 7mm socket.
  • Torque to 44 in-lb (5 Nm)

Step 7: Plug the connector back in

  • Push the connector onto the MAF until it clicks/locks.
  • If there was a lock tab, re-engage it.

Step 8: Optional quick connector cleanup

  • If you saw dust/green corrosion in the connector, spray a small amount of electrical contact cleaner onto the connector ends and let it air-dry.
  • Use a shop towel to catch any runoff.

āœ… After Repair

  • āœ… If you disconnected the battery, reconnect it securely (negative cable last).
  • āœ… Start the engine and let it idle for 2-3 minutes. The idle may fluctuate briefly while the computer relearns.
  • āœ… Test drive 10-15 minutes with mixed city/highway driving and verify the hesitation/rough running is gone.
  • āœ… If a check-engine light was on, use a scan tool to clear codes and confirm none return (many parts stores can scan codes).
  • āœ… Recheck the intake tube clamps for snug fit (no air leaks/whistling).

šŸ’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $200-$450 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $70-$250 (parts only)

You Save: $130-$200 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1.0 hours.
