Step-by-step DIY instructions with tools, parts list, safety tips, and 18 lb-in (2 NĀ·m) torque spec for 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020
š§ Escalade - Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor Replacement
The MAF sensor measures how much air is entering your engine so the computer can add the right amount of fuel. If it fails, you can get rough idle, poor acceleration, stalling, or a check-engine light (often P0101/P0102/P0103).
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
ā ļø Safety & Precautions
- ā ļø Work on a cool engine; the intake area can be hot.
- ā ļø Turn ignition fully OFF and keep the key/fob away from the vehicle.
- ā ļø Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent accidental shorts and unwanted throttle movement.
- ā ļø Do not touch the sensing elements inside the MAF; theyāre delicate.
š§ Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" ratchet
- 6" extension (1/4")
- Torx T20 bit
- Flat-blade screwdriver
- Trim clip tool
- Flashlight
- Torque wrench (inch-pound)
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
š© Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Mass air flow (MAF) sensor - Qty: 1
- Electrical contact cleaner - Qty: 1
- Dielectric grease - Qty: 1
š Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and shift to Park.
- Pop the hood and let the engine cool if it was recently running.
- Disconnect the battery: use a 10mm socket to remove the negative (-) battery cable and keep it from springing back onto the post.
šØ Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Locate the MAF sensor
- Use a flashlight and find the air intake tube coming from the air filter box toward the engine.
- The MAF sensor is mounted in that tube, typically near the air box, with an electrical connector plugged into it.
Step 2: Unplug the MAF electrical connector
- Press the connector lock tab by hand; if itās stubborn, use a trim clip tool gently to help lift the lock.
- Pull the connector straight off (donāt yank on the wires).
- If dirty, spray contact cleaner and let dry.
Step 3: Loosen the intake tube (if needed for access)
- If the sensor screws are hard to reach, loosen the intake tube clamp(s) using a flat-blade screwdriver.
- Wiggle the tube slightly for access; you usually donāt need to remove the whole tube.
Step 4: Remove the MAF sensor from the housing
- Use a Torx T20 bit with a 1/4" ratchet and 6" extension (1/4") to remove the two MAF retaining screws.
- Carefully pull the MAF sensor straight out. If it feels stuck, gently wiggle while pullingādo not pry on the plastic housing.
Step 5: Install the new MAF sensor
- Compare the new sensor to the old one to ensure the shape and connector match.
- Slide the new sensor into place the same direction as the old one.
- Install the screws by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Tighten the screws with a torque wrench: Torque to 2 NĀ·m (18 lb-in).
Step 6: Reconnect the intake tube and connector
- If you loosened any clamps, tighten them using a flat-blade screwdriver until snug and the tube canāt rotate by hand.
- Add a tiny smear of dielectric grease to the connector seal (not the metal pins).
- Plug the connector back in until it clicks/locks.
Step 7: Reconnect the battery
- Reconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
ā After Repair
- Start the engine and let it idle for 2-3 minutes. Listen for hissing (intake leak) and check that idle is steady.
- If you have a scan tool, clear any stored MAF-related codes and recheck for codes after a short drive.
- Test drive 10-15 minutes with light and moderate acceleration. If the check-engine light returns, the intake tube may be loose or there may be another airflow/vacuum issue.
š° DIY vs Shop Cost
