🔧 TLX - Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor Replacement
The MAF sensor measures the air entering your engine so the computer can add the right amount of fuel. When it fails or reads wrong, you can get rough idle, hesitation, poor mpg, or a check-engine light. On your TLX, it’s mounted in the intake air duct near the air filter box.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
Assumption: Your TLX uses either Phillips or security Torx screws on the MAF.
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Let the engine cool before working near the intake and radiator area.
- ⚠️ Keep dirt out of the intake tube and airbox while the sensor is out.
- ⚠️ Do not touch the sensing element inside the MAF (it’s delicate).
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required, but it’s safer to disconnect the negative terminal to prevent accidental shorts.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" ratchet
- 3" extension (1/4")
- Phillips #2 screwdriver
- Torx T20 security bit
- Torque wrench (inch-pound)
- Flat trim tool
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Mass air flow (MAF) sensor - Qty: 1
- MAF sensor O-ring / seal - Qty: 1
- Dielectric grease - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Open the hood and remove any plastic engine cover if equipped (pull straight up by hand; it’s held by clips).
- If disconnecting the battery: use a 10mm socket to remove the negative terminal and isolate it so it can’t spring back.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Locate the MAF sensor
- Find the air filter box and the intake tube that runs toward the engine.
- The MAF sensor is the small module inserted into the intake duct with an electrical connector.
Step 2: Unplug the MAF electrical connector
- Press the connector lock tab and pull the connector straight off.
- If it’s stuck, use a flat trim tool to gently help the tab release. Don’t pull on the wires.
- Apply a tiny amount of dielectric grease to the connector seal during reassembly (optional but helpful).
Step 3: Remove the MAF sensor fasteners
- Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver or Torx T20 security bit (security Torx has a hole in the tip) to remove the two MAF screws.
- Set the screws aside where they can’t fall into the engine bay.
Step 4: Remove the MAF sensor from the intake duct
- Wiggle the sensor straight out by hand.
- Remove the old MAF sensor O-ring / seal if it stayed in the duct.
- Inspect the duct opening for dirt; wipe the rim only (don’t push debris inside).
Step 5: Install the new MAF sensor
- Install the new MAF sensor O-ring / seal on the sensor (lightly seat it evenly).
- Insert the new sensor into the duct in the same orientation as the old one.
- Reinstall the screws using a Phillips #2 screwdriver or Torx T20 security bit.
- Torque to 3.5 Nm (31 in-lbs).
Step 6: Reconnect the connector and reassemble
- Push the connector on until it clicks.
- If you removed the battery terminal, reinstall it with a 10mm socket and torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
- Reinstall the engine cover (if equipped) by aligning the grommets and pressing down firmly.
✅ After Repair
- Start the engine and let it idle for 2-3 minutes. It should idle smoothly.
- Check that no warning lights appear and that the connector is fully seated.
- Take a short test drive (5-10 minutes) and verify normal acceleration and shifting.
- If the check-engine light stays on, the code may need to be cleared with a scan tool (some lights clear after a few drive cycles if the issue is fixed).
