🔧 Mass Air Flow Sensor - Replacement

The MAF sensor on your Rogue measures incoming air so the engine computer can set fuel delivery correctly. If it is dirty or failed, you may see rough idle, poor acceleration, or a check engine light. This repair is straightforward and usually takes less than an hour.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the engine off and let it cool before starting.
  • Key off and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
  • Do not spray cleaners into the sensor connector.
  • Handle the sensor carefully. The sensing element is fragile.
  • Battery disconnect is not required for this job, but it is okay to disconnect the negative terminal if you want extra safety.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Ratchet
  • 8mm socket
  • Flat-blade trim tool
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Torque wrench
  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Mass air flow sensor - Qty: 1
  • Intake tube clamp, if damaged - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and make sure the engine is fully off and cool.
  • If you plan to disconnect the battery, remove the negative cable first.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the MAF sensor

  • Open the hood and locate the air intake tube between the air filter box and engine.
  • The MAF sensor is mounted in the intake tract near the air filter housing.
  • Take a quick photo first.

Step 2: Disconnect the electrical connector

  • Use your fingers or needle-nose pliers to release the connector lock if needed.
  • Pull the connector straight off the MAF sensor.
  • Do not pull on the wires.

Step 3: Remove the sensor

  • Use the 8mm socket and ratchet to remove the MAF sensor screws.
  • Lift the sensor straight out of the housing.
  • If it feels stuck, wiggle it gently. Do not pry hard.

Step 4: Install the new sensor

  • Place the new MAF sensor into the housing in the same direction as the old one.
  • Install the screws by hand first with the 8mm socket.
  • Torque to 2.5-3.0 Nm (22-27 in-lbs).

Step 5: Reconnect and inspect

  • Push the electrical connector on until it clicks.
  • Check that the intake tube and clamps are fully seated.
  • Make sure nothing is left loose around the air box.

Step 6: Start and verify

  • Start the engine and let it idle for a minute.
  • Watch for a check engine light and listen for air leaks.
  • If a scan tool is available, clear stored MAF-related codes after repair.

✅ After Repair

  • Drive the Rogue on a short road test.
  • Check idle quality and throttle response.
  • If the light returns, inspect the intake tube for cracks or loose clamps.
  • If codes remain, scan for related air leak or wiring faults.
