š§ Encore - Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor Replacement
The MAF sensor measures how much air enters your engine so the computer can add the right amount of fuel. When it fails or gets contaminated, you can get rough idle, poor acceleration, or a check engine light.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
Assumption: your MAF is mounted in the air intake tube by the air box.
ā ļø Safety & Precautions
- ā ļø Work on a cool engine; hot turbo/intake parts can burn you.
- ā ļø Turn ignition OFF and keep the key/fob away so the throttle system doesnāt wake up.
- ā ļø Donāt touch the MAF āsensor elementā (the delicate wire/film inside); itās easy to damage.
- ā ļø If you disconnect the battery: use a 10mm wrench and remove the negative terminal first.
š§ Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 10mm wrench
- 1/4" drive ratchet

- Torx T20 bit socket
- Small flat-blade screwdriver
- Flashlight
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
š© Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Mass air flow (MAF) sensor - Qty: 1
- MAF sensor O-ring seal - Qty: 1
š Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Open the hood and use a flashlight to locate the MAF sensor on the intake tube near the air box.
- If you want maximum safety from accidental electrical issues, disconnect the battery negative cable using a 10mm wrench.
šØ Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Locate the MAF sensor
- Use a flashlight and find the sensor plugged into the intake tube between the air box and the turbo inlet area.
- The MAF will have an electrical connector and usually 2 small Torx screws holding it into the housing.
Step 2: Disconnect the electrical connector
- Press the connector locking tab by hand; if itās stuck, gently help the tab with a small flat-blade screwdriver.
- Pull the connector straight off. Donāt pull on the wires.
Step 3: Remove the MAF sensor from the intake tube
- Remove the MAF mounting screws using a Torx T20 bit socket with a 1/4" drive ratchet and 6" extension.
- Carefully twist and pull the sensor straight out.
- Watch for the seal (O-ring). If it stays in the housing, remove it gently by hand.
Step 4: Install the new MAF sensor
- Compare the new sensor to the old one (same shape and connector).
- Install a new MAF sensor O-ring seal onto the sensor (lightly seat it in its groove by hand).
- Slide the sensor into the housing straight and fully seated (no pinching the seal).
- Install the screws using a Torx T20 bit socket.
- Torque to 2 NĀ·m (18 in-lb).
Step 5: Reconnect everything
- Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks into place.
- If you disconnected the battery, reconnect the negative cable using a 10mm wrench and tighten securely.
Step 6: Quick intake check (important)
- Inspect the intake tube and clamps near where you worked.
- If you loosened any clamp, tighten it using a 7mm socket with a 1/4" drive ratchet.
- An air leak after the MAF can cause rough running and codes.
ā After Repair
- Start your Encore and let it idle for 2-3 minutes.
- Take a short test drive (5-10 minutes) with gentle acceleration.
- If the check engine light was on, clear codes with a scan tool (or it may clear after a few drive cycles if the issue is fixed).
- If it runs worse than before, recheck the connector is fully clicked and the intake clamps are tight.
