🔧 Highlander - Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor Replacement

Your Highlander’s MAF sensor measures the air entering the engine so the computer can add the right amount of fuel. If it fails or is contaminated, you can get rough idle, poor power, or a check engine light. Replacing it is a quick job at the air intake tube by the air box.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.8 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on a cool engine to avoid burns.
  • ⚠️ Keep the key/fob away from the vehicle so the engine can’t be started accidentally.
  • ⚠️ Do not touch the sensing element inside the MAF (it’s delicate and oils can ruin it).
  • ⚠️ If you disconnect the battery, you may lose radio presets and idle may relearn.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 6" extension (1/4" drive)
  • Flat-blade screwdriver (medium)
  • Phillips #2 screwdriver
  • Torx T20 driver
  • Inch-pound torque wrench (10–80 in-lb range)
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Mass air flow (MAF) sensor - Qty: 1
  • Air intake tube clamp (optional, if damaged) - Qty: 1
  • Engine air filter (optional, if due/dirty) - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and locate the air box and intake tube (the MAF sensor is mounted in the tube right after the air box).
  • If you choose to disconnect the battery: use a 10mm socket to remove the negative terminal and set it aside so it can’t spring back. Optional but reduces accidental shorts.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Unplug the MAF sensor connector

  • Find the electrical connector on the MAF sensor (mounted in the intake tube by the air box).
  • Press the locking tab and pull the connector straight off by hand.
  • If it’s stuck, use a flat-blade screwdriver (medium) to gently help the tab release. Don’t pry hard on the plastic.

Step 2: Remove the MAF sensor screws

  • Look at the two retaining screws on the sensor.
  • Remove them using either a Phillips #2 screwdriver or a Torx T20 driver (use whichever matches your screw heads).
  • Set the screws aside where they won’t fall into the engine bay.

Step 3: Remove the MAF sensor from the housing

  • Pull the sensor straight out by hand.
  • There is usually an O-ring seal (a rubber ring that seals air leaks). If it sticks, wiggle gently—do not force or twist aggressively.
  • Inspect the O-ring for tears or flattening; replace the sensor if the O-ring is damaged or missing.

Step 4: Install the new MAF sensor

  • Compare the old and new sensor so the mounting and connector match.
  • Slide the new sensor straight in, fully seated and aligned.
  • Install the two screws by hand first to avoid cross-threading, then tighten with your Phillips #2 screwdriver or Torx T20 driver.
  • Finish with an inch-pound torque wrench (10–80 in-lb range): Torque to 18 in-lb (2.0 N·m).

Step 5: Reconnect the connector and (if removed) the battery

  • Push the electrical connector on until it clicks.
  • If you disconnected the battery, reinstall the negative terminal using a 10mm socket and tighten snugly (do not strip the clamp).

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 2–3 minutes; it should idle smoothly.
  • If a check engine light was on, it may need to be cleared with a scan tool after repair.
  • Test drive 10–15 minutes and recheck for warning lights and normal throttle response.
  • If you disconnected the battery, the idle may fluctuate briefly while it relearns. This is normal for a short time.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $250-$450 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $90-$220 (parts only)

You Save: $160-$230 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1.0 hours.
