🔧 Equinox - Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor Replacement

The MAF sensor measures how much air enters your engine so the computer can add the right amount of fuel. If it fails, your Equinox can run rough, hesitate, or turn on the check engine light. This job is quick because the sensor sits in the intake tube near the air box.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.8 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on a cool engine to avoid burns.
  • ⚠️ Keep fingers/tools away from the radiator fan (it can turn on by itself).
  • ⚠️ Do not touch the MAF sensing element inside the sensor; it’s delicate.
  • ⚠️ If you disconnect the battery, keep the key out of the ignition.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • 8mm socket
  • 1/4" ratchet
  • 6" extension (1/4")
  • Torx T20 screwdriver
  • Small flathead screwdriver
  • OBD2 scan tool

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Mass air flow (MAF) sensor - Qty: 1
  • MAF sensor O-ring/seal - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🧰 Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • 🧰 Open the hood and remove any loose clothing/jewelry.
  • 🧰 Optional (recommended): Disconnect the negative battery cable using an 8mm socket.
  • 🧰 Know your tools: a Torx is a star-shaped screw head (T20 in this job).

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the MAF sensor

  • Find the air intake tube that runs from the air filter box to the engine.
  • The MAF sensor is the small sensor with an electrical connector mounted in/onto that intake tube near the air box.

Step 2: Unplug the electrical connector

  • Press the connector lock tab by hand; if it’s tight, gently help it with a small flathead screwdriver.
  • Pull the connector straight off (don’t pull on the wires).
  • Tip: Wiggle gently, don’t force it.

Step 3: Remove the MAF sensor from the intake tube

  • Remove the sensor retaining screws using a Torx T20 screwdriver.
  • Carefully lift/pull the sensor straight out.
  • If it feels stuck, twist slightly while pulling—do not pry hard.

Step 4: Check the seal and install the new sensor

  • Inspect the old sensor seal/O-ring; replace it with the new one if your sensor doesn’t come with one installed.
  • Insert the new sensor straight into the intake tube (make sure it sits fully flat).
  • Install the screws by hand first, then snug them with the Torx T20 screwdriver.
  • Torque: If you have a small torque driver, tighten to 2.5 Nm (22 in-lbs) (snug, not tight).

Step 5: Reconnect the connector and re-check your work

  • Push the electrical connector on until it clicks.
  • If you disconnected the battery, reconnect the negative cable using an 8mm socket.
  • Quick check: Make sure the intake tube is seated and no tools are left in the engine bay.

Step 6: Clear codes (if the check engine light was on)

  • Plug in your OBD2 scan tool and clear stored MAF-related codes.
  • If you don’t clear codes, the light may turn off after a few drive cycles if the fix worked.

✅ After Repair

  • 🔎 Start the engine and let it idle for 1–2 minutes.
  • 🔎 Listen for hissing/whistling (could mean an intake air leak).
  • 🔎 Take a short test drive and confirm acceleration feels normal.
  • 🔎 If the check engine light returns (common codes: P0101/P0102), inspect for cracked intake tube, loose clamps, or a dirty air filter.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: ₹6,000-₹14,000 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: ₹3,000-₹10,000 (parts only)

You Save: ₹3,000-₹6,000 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run ₹1,500-₹3,500/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.3-0.8 hours.
